Title: Mutations
1Mutations
2Aim What are Mutations?
I. Mutation a change in the base sequence of a
DNA molecule.
3A. Characteristics of Mutations
1.Mutations are random events
2. Mutations are an important source of totally
new forms of genes
3. Mutations that are in body cells only affect
individual, and cannot be passed onto offspring
(individual is exposed to radiation or toxins)
4. Mutations in single-celled organisms or in the
sex cells of multi-cellular organisms can be
passed onto offspring.
4a. In organisms that reproduce sexually, only
mutations in the genes of sex cells can become
the basis of evolutionary change.
How would this information affect Lamarcks
theory of evolution?
5. Most mutations are harmful and may cause the
offspring to die.
6. Some mutations may benefit an individual and
increase its chance of survival allowing it to
pass on to next generation.
a. This will eventually lead to evolution of anew
species.
