Title: Presentation of the project OliveNET Croatian: MasliNET

1
Presentation of the project OliveNET (Croatian
MasliNET)

2
Wireless Sensor Networks
  • A set of a large number of sensor nodes that
  • collect data from the environment
  • make decisions locally and interact with the
    environment (adaptability, intelligent systems)
  • communicate with each other and with the central
    system
  • Sensor node
  • Very small (widely applicable) computer with
    limited resources
  • Applications
  • Medicine, environmental protection, transport,
    industry, military, agriculture etc.

OliveNET RD department at the Faculty of
Electrical Engineering and Computing
  • The goal is to demonstrate the application of
    wireless sensor networks in agriculture
  • Continue with research and cooperation with
    Siemens
  • Research challenges, interdisciplinary
  • Develop a new platform
  • Minimize consumption
  • Acquire, process and transmit visual information
  • Robustness
  • Project will take 3 years
  • Exploration phase
  • Test phase

A part of the FERs Department of Electronic
Systems and Information Processing team for
research and development of wireless sensor
networks, http//aig.zesoi.fer.hr
4
The concept of a wireless sensor network in olive
growing
  • Tree-level network provides information for
    monitoring
  • microclimate, soil condition, plant condition
    and presence of pest
  • Functional elements
  • Ground node
  • Tree node
  • Local communication
  • Local server
  • Link with the central mainframe through a public
    communication network
  • Idea link single olive groves networks into
    an integrated system

5
Using information acquired from sensor networks
  • Implementation of the concept on larger areas
  • more efficient monitoring of
  • microclimate conditions in an olive grove
  • plants and fruits development
  • pest occurrence
  • Support in decision-making in growing and use
    of protective agents
  • Support in making projection models
  • Infrastructure for studying pest and their
    geographical distribution
  • Prerequisite for multidisciplinary research

6
Cooperation between Siemens and FER so far
  • Project Universal Telemetric Platform
  • Collect, organize and store data from distant
    measuring locations
  • Forward the collected information to end-user
    applications for processing and/or visualization
  • Project Intelligent House Wireless Sensor
    Network
  • Microclimate and energy consumption management
  • Lighting, heating and air-conditioning devices
    management
  • Distant supervision and control of these systems

7
Siemenss contribution to the MasliNET project
  • Experience in technology
  • Siemens creates new technologies
  • Siemens Croatia is taking part in developing
devices and solutions based on new technologies
  • Participation in international agricultural
    projects
  • Implementation of the incentives system
  • Implementation of the crops registry
  • Implementation of EU regulations
  • Participation in industrial projects in which
    similar technologies are being applied

8
Perspectives and project coverage
  • Perspectives
  • Possibility of using the acquired experiences in
    other areas of olive growing
  • Implementation in other olive groves and other
    crops
  • Projects web site

9
THE OLIVE FRUIT FLY(Bactrocera oleae)
  • The most important pest in olive growing
  • Damage in yields and oil quality, up to 100!
  • Over HRK 100,000,000 worth of damage (Croatia)

10
Monitoring - prevention
  • Yellow boards (pheromone)
  • McPhails traps, pheromone

11
Problems - Solutions
  • Field inspection
  • Time and fuel consumption
  • 2 sites per county at the most
  • Expenses HRK 80,000 100,000 and 240 workdays
  • Automatic trap
  • Monitoring at any time at an unlimited number of
sites islands, hardly accessible sites, large
    plantations!
  • GIS cards, occurrence dynamics
