What is Stress?
  • Stress is the reaction of the body and mind to
    every day challenges and demands. We all
    experience stress everyday. In order that stress
    does not play a negative part in our lives we
    need to recognize it and know how to manage it.
    Stress is not necessarily good or bad. It can
    motivate us to do our best and give us extra
    energy we need to reach our goals.

Causes of Stress
  • The following are causes of stress
  • illness
  • disabilities and injuries
  • poverty
  • pollution and noise
  • using tobacco, alcohol or other drugs
  • lack of physical activity
  • death of a loved one
  • divorce of a parent
  • having trouble in relationships

The Bodys Response to Stress
  • The following are examples of the way your body
    might react to stress
  • headache
  • asthma
  • high blood pressure
  • weakened immune system
  • difficulty concentrating
  • mood swings
  • crying
  • not being able to eat or eating continually
  • risk of substance abuse

How to Manage Stress
  • Plan ahead, make a list or schedule
  • Get enough sleep
  • Get regular physical activity
  • Eat nutritious food with regular meals, limit
    comfort foods, limit caffeine
  • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs

Stress-management techniques
  • Redirect your energy to release nervous energy
  • Relax and laugh by using some method of
    relaxation such as deep breathing, stretching,
    laughing.
  • Keep a positive outlook because the way your
    think often determines how you feel.
  • Seek out support by talking to someone you can
    trust
  • Express yourself by sharing your feelings with
    someone you trust. Set goals for your future with
    this person.

  • Depression is a prolonged feeling of
    helplessness, hopelessness and sadness.
