- The primary contributing and sustaining factor
to chronic (and acute) poor health among
grandparents is - obesity.
- 18/20 (90) are overweight
- Of these, 80 are obese
- Only 10 are in the healthy weight range and this
is borderline BMI. - Healthy BMI range is 19-26.
2At the beginning and end of each Health Watchers
exercise regimen, HMC professional staff monitor
blood oxygen, blood pressure, and heart rate.
All diabetics must take their blood sugar before
engaging in exercise.

3Education and nutrition information sessions
Weekly pre-exercise education sessions, presented
here by Dr. Hall, cover topics such as healthy
eating, stress reduction, reading food labels,
understanding your blood lipids, and proper at
home exercise regimens.
4Cardio and leg strength exercise
Guided exercise is undertaken weekly and records
kept of weekly individual progress. Pre-session
weights are also recorded each week.

Grandchildrens exercise routines
- Group cooperative games encourage individual
balance and coordination as well as team play. - This nine year old is being raised by a 75 year
old grandmother with congestive heart failure,
high blood pressure and pulmonary disease.
6Exercise activities for grandchildren under 12
years
- Stretching
- Active group movement games such as Army, Navy
- Taebo
- Obstacle courses
- Swimming
7Resistance training for 13 grandchildren at the Y
Resistance weight training and aerobic exercise
are charted weekly under the supervision of YMCA
personnel. Both males and females engage in
weight training. Weight training has been found
to be particularly effective for increasing bone
density in females.
8Getting kids to eat healthier foods.
Eating more fruits and vegetables and drinking
water instead of carbonated, sugar and caffeine
beverages, are heavily stressed. Eating together
as a family is also an important part of the
program.

- THE TEST
- The number of times, within a 30-second time
period, that a person can come to a full stand
from a seated position with arms folded across
the chest. Age range 60-69 yrs., n14 Age
range 70-79 yrs., n12.9. - RESULTS
- 90 of participants improved significantly
- 10 (one participant) declined who experienced an
acute episode of congestive heart failure and
bronchial infection - Average improvement 25.5
