Toolbox presentation Occupational health
reporting requirements
3
Resources Safety reporting systems
  • Adopt risk management approach to hazardous
    substances
  • Personal exposure monitoring CONTAM
  • Biological monitoring MINEHEALTH
  • State Mining Engineer may request results
  • Health surveillance MINEHEALTH
  • Initial and periodic health assessments
  • Additional health assessments (risk-based)
  • Notification of occupational disease MINEHEALTH

4
CONTAM
  • Regular risk assessment of exposure to airborne
    contaminants
  • CONTAM sampling quotas not issued for exploration
not on a mine site but Resources Safety may
    request representative sampling results
  • Only CONTAM registered samplers may submit results

Biological monitoring result form online
  • Mines Safety and Inspection Regulations 1995
  • 3.28(1). Biological monitoring
  • The principal employer and each employer at a
mine must ensure that biological monitoring is
carried out in respect of employees who engage in
specified occupational exposure work at the mine,
where there is a valid biological monitoring
procedure and a reasonable likelihood that
    accepted values might be exceeded.

7
Biological monitoring aims
  • To assist in treatment of affected worker
    following accidental exposures
  • For routine screening to assess if a hazardous
substance has entered the body and accumulating
to levels that may cause damage
  • To assess dose-dependent health effects

8
MineHealth health assessment
HAZARDS dust silica noise
  • Questionnaire
  • Symptoms and smoking status
  • Lung function
  • Airways and lung capacity
  • Chest x-ray
  • Hearing test
  • Noise-induced hearing loss

9
MineHealth forms online
Only approved person or medical practitioner may
complete health assessment form
10
Notification of outcome of health assessment
  • No specific notification form required when
medical practitioner or approved person is
advising an employer of the outcome of an
    employees health assessment, including
    biological monitoring
  • However, template is available online to ensure
    the notification process is completed
satisfactorily without unnecessary delay, and is
a useful guide for those notifying for the first
    time

11
Noise report and plan
  • Need to prepare a noise report as soon as
practicable after mining commences, and within a
    year
  • Additional noise reports required
  • if increase in noise exposure likely to exceed 5
    dB
  • every five years until exposure below action
    level
  • if requested by Resources Safety
  • Data collected by approved noise officer using
    approved procedures and equipment

Occupational disease notification form online
  • Mines Safety and Inspection Regulations 1995
  • 3.39. Notice of occupational disease
  • If an employer at a mine receives advice from an
employee or a person on behalf of an employee
that the employee has an occupational disease,
the employer must, as soon as is practicable,
notify the Mines occupational physician in a form
approved for that purpose by the State mining
engineer that the employee has the disease.
