Title: Matter is anything that occupies space'
1Matter is anything that occupies space. There are
three phases of Matter Based on the movement of
molecules Solids- the molecules are moving very
slow. Liquid- the molecules are moving a little
faster Gas- the molecules are moving the fastest
2Atoms are the smallest unit of matter Atoms are
made up of smaller charged units Positive charged
units are called protons Negative charged units
are called electrons Neutral charged units are
called neutrons The number of protons an atom has
is called the atomic number Protons neutrons is
called the atomic mass
3The center of an atom is called the nucleus The
nucleus of an atom contains protons and
neutrons Outside the nucleus in rings are found
the electrons electrons are responsible for all
chemical reactions.
4Some atoms may loose electrons and become
positive in charge. These atoms are known as
Positive cations
5Some atoms pick up extra electrons and become
negative in charge. These are known as negative
anions.
6Opposites attract! So positive ions are
attracted towards negative ions. This attraction
forms a chemical bond known as an ionic bond.
Salts are ionic bonds.
