Title: IMPLEMENTING THE RENEWED PARTNERSHIP FOR GROWTH AND JOBS
1IMPLEMENTING THE RENEWED PARTNERSHIP FOR GROWTH
AND JOBS DEVELOPING A KNOWLEDGE FLAGSHIP
The European Institute of Technology
2Background of the EIT proposal
- The idea was put forward in the mid term review
of the Lisbon strategy (Spring 2005) - The innovation gap is rising and the nature and
scale of the challenge can be hardly met by
Member States alone - Two Communications delivered following extensive
consultations - The Commission adopted on Oct. 18th its formal
proposal to establish the EIT. - Favorably received by the Lahti Informal Council
3EIT mission and objectives
- Improve the competitiveness of Europe
- Perform integrated innovation, research and
education activities in areas of key economic and
social interest - Create a critical mass and scale of resources to
compete globally - Become a reference model for the management of
innovation - Become a symbol of the knowledge Europe

6The evolution of the EIT 2009-onwards
- 2009
- the EIT board is appointed and the central
structure is established - the identification for the first KICs is launched
2010 the first KICs start their activities
2011 onwards identification and establishment of
other KICs
7The focus on business research interaction
- The business experience as core in the GB
- The business as a strategic partner in KICs
- The development of an entrepreneurial culture and
education - The focus on putting knowledge into action (IP,
start-ups) - The new working context where business experience
and entrepreneurship is rewarded
8The role of Territorial Knowledge Systems
- TKSs are key laboratories for the integration of
the K triangle - A TKS is the natural node of a KIC
- Many TKSs are expressing interest in the EIT
they seem to be an emerging major constituent - They are the answer to the involvement of SMEs in
the EIT
9Questions
- Is the proposed structure appropriate
- to promote business research interaction?
- to provide opportunities for the development and
integration of TKSs? - to contribute to the modernization of our
research and higher education sector?
