Title: Technical Board Meeting

1
Technical Board Meeting
  • Members
  • How the Board will operate
  • How to run technical board meetings
  • List of items that need to be discussed in the
    upcoming weeks/months.

2
Proposed MembershipOthers invited per topic (s)
under discussion
  • Cornell, H. Padamsee - Chair
  • SMTF spokespersons Helen, Nigel
  • INFN Carlo Pagani
  • KEK Saito, Hayano
  • DESY Simrock, Dieter Proch/Hans Weise (depends
    on who can come)
  • Argonne Mike Kelly
  • Brookhaven - Ilan BenZvi
  • Fermilab - Bill Foster, Harry Carter
  • LBNL John Corlett
  • Los Alamos - T. Tajima
  • MSU T. Grimm
  • ORNL Campisi
  • SLAC Chris Adolphsen
  • Jlab J, Preble, P. Kneisel

3
Proposed draft charges for the SMTF Technical
Advisory Board are
  • 1) Provide advice to the SMTF collaboration
on technical activities towards reaching the
goals of the SMTF, for the International Linear
Collider, Proton Driver, Rare Isotope Accelerator
    and CW RD projects.
  • 2) Give recommendations/suggestions to the
    SMTF spokespersons and Institutional Board.
  • 3) Review important objectives, schedules
and priorities of upcoming activities at SMTF.
  • 4) Provide input to the definition of
technical milestones at six month intervals.
  • 5) Review SMTF progress at six month
intervals, identifying gaps and possible problems
    in the SMTF program.
  • 6) Provide input to help optimize the SMTF
    objectives.
  • 7) Give summary reports to the SMTF
    collaboration.

4
How the Board will operate
  • Define issue, options..
  • Discussion, action items
  • Aim for overall consensus, overall inclusivity
  • .
  • If too contentious, then vote.

5
Open List of items that need to be discussed in
the upcoming weeks/monthsFrom discussions with
Helen and Nigel
  • Cryomodule related topics
  • Cavity related topics
  • Snowmass prep
  • Industrialization
  • PD topics
  • CW topics
  • RIA topics

6
Proposal
  • Go through listAdd items to list(Resist detail
discussion for now)Discuss one item which is
urgent and information is ripe4th Gen Cryomodule
    (Helen)

7
Cavity related topicsfor 30 MV/m and also higher
gradient
  • Continue effort to obtain three cavities from
DESY for Jlab, FNAL and Cornell to help qualify
    facilities
  • Develop a set of tools at one lab to make TESLA
    cavity
  • e.g. dies and welding jigs.
  • Make a 9-cell cavity out of large grain
  • Make 9- cell cavity re-entrant shape
  • Discuss 3.9 GHz deflecting cavity development for
  • ILC crab cavity/CW light source
  • Discuss 3.9 GHz, harmonic cavity for injector,
possible use for ILC bunch compression,

8
4th Generation Cryomodule..
  • Discuss pros and cons of different module layouts
now under consideration for first US-ILC
    module,See Helens spreadsheets/slides
  • Hold a module meeting at PAC?
  • Choose, eventually
  • Organize troops to make a video of DESY cavity
    preparation and cryomodule assembly for
    industrial and lab training

9
Other componentscouplers, tuners, etc
  • Develop 1.3 GHz fast ferrite phase shifter tuners
    for ILC
  • Get the most of cavity gradients
  • Use for high power processing couplers with stub
    tuner..conditioning modules

10
Snowmass Related
  • Gather items worthy of discussion at Snowmass
  • Should we have a pre-Snowmass meeting for e.g. at
    Cornell SRF2005
  • Available time Sunday, Friday afternoon

11
Industrialization
  • Set up industrialization workshop, host
    Jlab?LANL?
  • We need Jlab to participate in development of
    joint industrialization plan (GDE, SMTF,
    US-regional capability)
  • Develop industrialization philosophy
  • Develop industrialization plan
  • Attract big industries
  • Take new industries under wing
  • e.g. ADC (Advance Design Consulting) under one
    laboratory wings (Jlab?)
  • ADC made cryomodule shells for SNS/Jlab
  • Fund specific industrial development studies for
specific parts of the process, or for specific
    components
  • Like DESY coupler study

12
PD type issues (drawn from PD review)
  • Is the gradient 26 MV/m assumed for the
elliptical cavities too near the current state
    of the art?
  • o 10 to 400MeV
  • 3-spoke, bß0.61, 325 MHz
  • or elliptical bß0.47 and 0.61, 1300 MHz
  • 400 to 1200 MeV elliptical b0.81, 1300 MHz
  • The ß0.47 and (to a lesser degree) the 0.61,
1300 MHz elliptical cavities have not been
developed and are quite different from any
    elliptical cavity developed so far.
  • Fabricate and test some models? Where?
  • Dressed cavities couplers, tuners, cryomodules
  • Test 4.5 ms operation

13
CW
  • Can we get one of the Rossendorf modules from
    HEPL, shutting down?
  • Make plan for CW cryomodule
  • e.g. Modify two 7-cell cavities sent to Cornell
    by DESY
  • Install two 7-cell cavities sent to Cornell by
    DESY with HOM loads..
