3How does e-mail work?
- E-mail is a digital document transmitted from one
computer to another, usually over the Internet - Computers and software that provide e-mail
services form an e-mail system - At the heart of the system is an e-mail server
that runs e-mail server software - Store-and-forward technology means that incoming
e-mail is stored on an e-mail server until your
server requests them
4How does e-mail work?
- Two types of e-mail systems are commonly used
- Web-based e-mail means you connect to the Web to
read and compose e-mail messages using browser
software - Local e-mail software runs on your hard drive and
allows you to compose and read your mail while
offline. - Local e-mail is also called POP mail based on the
Post Office Protocol software used on the e-mail
server

with an e-mail message - More on e-mail attachments

unsolicited e-mail before it reaches your Inbox - Never reply to spam or click on the links in the
spam e-mails
15Hardware Mobile Internet access devices
- Mobile Internet access offers continuous Internet
connection wherever you go - Mobile phone that can connect to the Internet is
sometimes called a smartphone - A PDA (personal digital assistant) is a handheld
device that features a touch screen, a personal
organizer, a memory slot, and the ability to
synchronize data with a PC - A broadband PC card is a digital circuit board
that plugs into your notebook computer
16Hardware Mobile Internet access devices
Examples of mobile devices
17Hardware Mobile Internet access devices
- Mobile E-mail
- Many mobile e-mail systems feature push e-mail
where e-mail is delivered to your mobile device
with a sound alert - A microbrowser is specially designed to display
Web pages on a small screen - WAP microbrowsers provide access to Web sites
