Followership
  • What do you think when you hear the word
    follower?
  • When are you a follower?
  • Not all of us are leaders, but all of us are
followers in some arenas of our lives.
  • Most of us will be in more follower roles
throughout our lives than in leadership roles

Followership
  • People don't just follow anyone. You can't just
say 'follow me' and expect people to follow out
of the goodness of their hearts. You have to give
them good reason for them to follow.

  • Creating a Culture of Courageous Followership
    (Chaleff, 1995)
  • The Five Dimensions of Courageous Followership
  • The courage to assume responsibility
  • As a leader, you must give opportunities to your
members to assume responsibility! Delegate, pass
on ownership, listen, and recognize the
    contribution of your members
  • Courageous followers create opportunities to
fulfill their potential and maximize their value
    to the organization
  • followers engage body, mind, soul, spirit in the
commonly held purpose and vision of the
organization and being a follower is a
condition, not a position (Dixon, 2003)

will as a leader! Be open to their call for
    change and transformation!

  • The courage to leave
  • Courageous followers have the courage to leave a
group even under the most enlightened and
effective leader (Chaleff, p. 8). However, when
a leader is ineffective and his or her actions
are detrimental to the group, a courageous
follower knows when to depart from the group.

Followership
  • The wicked leader is he who the people despise.
The good leader is he who the people revere. The
great leader is he who the people say we did it
    ourselves .
