What is SSR with Intervention?

• SSR with intervention began as an action research
  project in a midwest middle school.
• The school was looking for a way to help
  adolescents grow as readers by offering a
  variety of reading opportunities beyond the SSR
  (sit and read time).

Basic needs to be met during SSR with
Intervention

• Reading for enjoyment
• Managing informational text
• Reflecting upon reading through
  writing/journaling
• Experiencing educator involvement

Successful SSR with Intervention

• It takes ongoing attention and teacher commitment
  to properly implement the program.
• Once the routine is established, it is as easy to
  maintain as any other classroom routine. )

Before/Prior to SSR

• Select a prompt appropriate for the day.

• Write the prompt in designated location before
  SSR so students can see it and think about it
  before they read.

During SSR with Intervention

• Start SSR by modeling good reading behavior and
  read with students during the first few minutes.

• After a few minutes, conference with an
  individual student about his or her reading.

• Supplement reading with creative choices for
  reading promotion audio book, group sharing,
  paired reading, read-aloud, recommendations, etc.
