Title: I sentence you to a notetaking session on sentences

1
I sentence you to a note-taking session on
sentences
  • Eng 9
  • 2007-2008

2
What forms a sentence?
  • Must be an independent clause/thought.
  • Subject Verb
  • Must express a complete thought
  • Example
  • She danced the whole time.
  • Subject? Verb? Complete thought.

3
The complete thought test
  • A sentence is an independent, complete thought
    if
  • You can walk up to someone in the hall, say it,
    and have it make sense.
  • If your sentence doesnt make sense to another
person without giving more information, you are
dealing with a fragment, or dependent thought (a
thought that depends on something else).

4
Independent sentence clause or dependent fragment?
  • Because she ran last night.
  • Before we eat.
  • We ate.
  • We ran last night.
  • When we watched the movie.
  • We watched The Simpsons.

5
Sentence Variety
  • Why should one use more than just simple
    sentences?
  • If one independent clause makes a simple
sentence, what do two independent clauses make?

6
Compound sentences
  • Two or more independent clauses placed together.
  • Two sentences added together as one.
  • 2 simple sentences
  • She ran to the store. It was closed.
  • 1 compound sentence
  • She ran to the store, but it was closed.

7
How to join 2 sentences to make a compound
  • 3 different ways
  • Comma Coordinating Conjunction
  • For- to show reasons
  • And- to add a related idea
  • Nor- to show negative
  • But- to join opposite ideas
  • Or- to show alternative
  • Yet- to join opposite ideas
  • So- to show cause and effect

sentences with the correct coordinating
conjunctiondont forget commas!

    had some help.

9
2nd way to combine sentences
  • USE A SEMI-COLON
  • Join the sentences below using a semi-colon.
  • NFL plays on Sunday nights. I did not finish my
    English homework.

10
3rd and final way Conjunctive Adverb ,
  • Conjunctive Adverbs are like coordinating
conjunctions because you must choose the one that
    shows the correct relationship.
  • With conjunctive adverbs, you have to place a
semi-colon first, then the conjunction, then a
    comma.

11
What are some conjunctive adverbs
  • therefore, (shows an effect)
  • thus, (shows an effect)
  • consequently, (shows an effect)
