state bird is the Carolina Wren. The state flag
was designed in 1775.

• South Carolina was settled at Port Royal in
  1520 by the French Huguenots.
• The Spaniards landed there first but did not
  settle there so really the French Huguenots found
  South Carolina.
• It became the eighth state.

  miles.
• In 2000 the population was 4,012,012.
• The agriculture is tobacco, poultry, cattle,

Indians

• Indians were friendly but the Yemassee
• Indians caused trouble with the Cherokees.
• The Cherokee Indians gave up most of their
  possession of the territory in 1775.

Revolutionary War

• In 1776 the British tried to capture Charles
  Town but where repulsed in an assault on Fort
  Moultrie.
• Over 100 battles were fought in South Carolina.

Slavery

• The first settlers in South Carolina brought
  slaves to work on the Farms. Picking cotton was
  back breaking work. South Carolinians were the
  ones that invented the printing press and
  newspaper.

• A famous person from South Carolina is Vanna
