Background of Gregory Michie

• Spent the last nine year as a public school
  teacher on the south side of Chicago
• Was recipient of the Golden Apple Foundation
  Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996.

Room to Learn

• One of the First lessons that is wrote of is
  about Tavares, an African American student im Mr.
  Michies first class at Ralph Ellison Educational
  and Vocational Guidance Center.
• Tavares is a bright young man who shows potential
  during Mr. Michies first group project.

Never touch a student

• Mr. Michie teaches at a mostly Hispanic school.
• Gossip is spread at his expense by a student not
  wanting to go on a camping trip.
• Mr. Michie learns just how sensitive a subject
  teacher student touching can be.

• Reads a picture book called the Terrible horrible
  no good very bad day.
• Students reflect on the book and what it means to
  them
• Many of the teachers at the school talk down to
  the students rather than encouraging

• Read House on Mango Street
• Get to meet the author Sandra Cisneros
• Helps students Understand how important their
  culture is.

Look at your hands

• Discuss Mexican Heritage
• Try many new activities all aimed at improving
  students views of themselves and their culture.

No Zombies allowed

• Mr. Michie engages his students with a Media
  studies class
• He challenges students to not be Zombies in the
  class, but to actively participate in their own
  learning

See if I care

• Mr. Michie receives a letter stating that his
  class is boring.
• He then assigns the entire class to write and
  essay on how they could improve.

You Gotta Be Hard

• Chapter talks about how Gangs effect the
  classroom
• Students argue that violence will happen no
  matter and that Zero Tolerance has no effect what
  so ever.
• Argue that gangs are the students protection.

And Justice for all

• Reggie, and African American student is attacked
  by a police officer for simply being in a
  neighborhood the cop felt he shouldnt be.
• Takes over a year to investigate and is an issue
  that will continue to bother Reggie

• Mr. Michie uses a variety of techniques to reach
  his class.
• His ability to incorporate creativity and
  compassion make him an outstanding teacher.
