What is Alzheimers?

• Unknown cause or cure
• Progressive brain disorder that is permanent
• Most common cause of dementia found in people
  over 65

• Early Stages
• Trouble remembering recent events
• Becoming confused in familiar locations
• Always losing things
• Cant manage their own finances

• Late Stages
• Wandering
• Paranoia
• Violent behavior
• Repeating sentences and questions
• Loss of motor skills and the ability to recognize
  anyone

• Physical examination
• Interview with family and friends
• The patients ability to think
• Neurological tests

Risk Factors

• Age
• Genetics
• Family History
• High cholesterol and blood pressure

Effects on Brain

• Alzheimers Disease (AD) causes two abnormalities
  on the brain
• Plaques Tangles

Treatment

• There is no cure for AD
• There are simply medications to slow the process
• Drugs that are used to improve memory are
  Aricept, Exelon, and Reminyl
