- Article I of the United States Constitution
establishes the Legislative-or lawmaking- branch
of the government. - All legislative powers are granted to the United
States Congress which consists of a Senate and a
House of Representatives. - Congress has the authority to enact laws and
establish policies for the National Government

of Separation of Powers.

- While making the three branches of government
separate, the framers also wanted to be sure that
no one branch could act completely with out
restraints. - Therefore, the framers set up a system of
Checks-and-Balances. - Under this system, each branch of government
exercises some control over the other two. - The system of Checks-and-Balances prevents the
accumulation of too much power in any one branch
of government.
