  • Students will be able to explain how destructive
    humor and teasing can be an abuse of power.

  • Power can be disproportionate or unequal between
    people.
  • Ask students or list some of the ways some one
    can be more powerful
  • Knowledge, skill, experience, physical ability,
    income
  • Power can be abused through violence or
    harassment
  • Power can be abused through using insults,
    exclusive vocabulary, bragging, patronizing, or
    sarcasm
  • No one has the right to interfere with anyone
    elses success in any way including jeopardizing
    his or her personal safety.

What are some situations where one person has
more power over another?
  • when you find yourself in these positions you
    should handle them with respect for others and
    gracefully.

    not make other students feel bad.

Productive and Destructive Humor
  • When one is in a position of power you have the
    responsibility to use that power skillfully
    without bragging, showing off and being
    insulting.
  • When one is in a position of power humor can be
    used positively or destructively.
  • Humor can be fun, enjoyable and respectful or it
    can be hurtful and mean.
  • Using humor in a hurtful and mean way is an abuse
    of power.

    decides whether humor is funny or mean- the
    person doing the teasing or the person being
    teased?

Assignment
  • As individuals, pairs, or small groups create
    your own T-chart for a situation from the list
    that has not been used.
  • List ways to handle the power situation in a
    positive kind way vs. Not handling the situation
    in a positive kind way.
  • There must be at least 4 items for each side
