Women and minorities, in engineering, they are
the real untapped resources," he says.
33ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Alexandria Boehm -
Environmental Engineer Alexandria Boehm grew up
in Oahu, Hawaii, immersed in the ocean. I spent
a lot of time in the water, she recalls,
surfing, snorkeling, SCUBA diving. But when
Boehm started college, I didnt know Id end up
studying coastal waters, she says. It just sort
of developed that way. She does, however,
remember what helped her decide to take up
environmental engineering. In her moms backyard
in Hawaii, theres a canal. We used to swim in
there, she recalls. But now its so disgusting
and polluted.
34ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Jean Philippe Couderc -
Biomedical Engineer - Ending Pharmaceutical
Heartbreak Considering that it costs about 900
million to get a new drug on the market,
pharmaceutical companies would like to learn
sooner, rather than later, if their investment is
going to turn into a liability. He specializes in
using digital signal processing to get
information from electrical signals in the body.
Couderc hopes to use his software to pick up on
the small changes in the hearts electrical
system
35ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Peter Cummings - Model
Behavior A LEADING EXPERT IN COMPUTER MODELING
AND MOLECULAR SIMULATION, PETER CUMMINGS IS
DEVELOPING ONE OF THE MOST ACCURATE MODELS OF
WATER EVER CREATED. He and his group have worked
for the past eight years on designing the most
accurate molecular model of water ever developed.
As Cummings points out, H2O displays lots of
anomalies, becoming less dense, for example, as
it freezes, unlike virtually all other liquids.
Cummings hopes that by creating the world's best
model of the water molecule, scientists and
engineers will have power to know how water will
behave in different situations
36ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Mark Edwards - The Water Guy
FIRST, MARC EDWARDS DISCOVERED HIGH LEVELS OF
LEAD IN WASHINGTON, D.C.'S, DRINKING WATER, THEN
HE HAD TO PERSUADE THE BUREAUCRACY TO GET THE
WORD OUT. The experience has taught Edwards not
only about the frustration of fighting
bureaucracy but also something about the quality
of today's engineering students. "You hear about
the fact that North American students are so far
behind their peers, but I will tell you that it
almost brings tears to my eyes to think about the
hours they invested and their commitment. It was
really remarkable. You can't tell me that
students of any era would have performed any
better."
37ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Tamara Hayes - Biomedical
Engineer - House Calls for the New
Millennium Hayes research involves gathering
data from different types of sensors placed
throughout a persons home. The information, she
and her colleagues hope, will help ferret out
behavioral changes that indicate the early stages
of dementia and Alzheimers. The technologies
themselves are pretty simple, Hayes explains.
Her monitoring toolkit includes motion sensors,
contact sensors, computer keyboard sensors and
mouse movement sensors.
38AUSTRALIAA chemical engineer down under has
invented a garment so loud it makes Hawaiian
shirts seem subdued. Its not rocket
scienceits rockin science, quips Richard
Helmer, a weekend guitarist in a local rock band
and researcher at Australias government-funded
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research
Organization. His wearable instrument shirt
enables wearers to play simply by moving one arm
to pick chords and the other to strum an
imaginary instruments stringslike an air guitar
except sounds are real. His teamincluding IT
specialists, chemical engineers, electrical
engineers and textile expertsspent three years
perfecting the textile-based interfaces
39ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Kimberly Jones OUT OF THIS
WORLD KIMBERLY JONES HOPES HER RESEARCH MAY SOME
DAY HELP TO MAKE LIVING ON MARS POSSIBLE. If
Kimberly Jones has her way, future space
travelers will be drinking their own shower
water. Well, after it's run through a few
filters, of course. Jones, a professor of civil
engineering at Howard University in Washington,
is working with researchers from Purdue
University and Alabama AM University at the NASA
Specialized Center of Research and Training for
Advanced Life Support. The center's mission is to
create space colonies whose inhabitants will live
on crops they grow themselves and recycle all
their waste.
40ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Frannie Léautier - Woman of
the World World Bank Institute head
FrannieLéautier gives new meaning to the word
persistence. She had to overcome incredible
obstacles to get an engineering degree in
Tanzania. The type of scientific knowledge and
technology that can transform life immediately in
areas like Africa tends to be very high science,
she explains. People assume that simple problems
need simple solutions, but thats not true in
places like Africa its the opposite. You need
complex science to deal with problems like
growing food in arid areas, getting drinkable
water and preserving food for long periods
without refrigeration.
41ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Daniel Moran - Biomedical
Engineer - Mind Games Working in collaboration
with neurosurgeon Eric C. Leuthardt, Moran is
developing technology that enables people to move
objects on a computer screen using only their
minds. No joystick. No keyboard. No motion
sensors. Just the electrical signals from their
brains. In their most recent experiment, Moran
and his coworkers were able to get a 14-year-old
boy to play the classic arcade game Space
Invaders with nothing but his imagination.
42ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Noel Sharkey - Jolly Good
Fellow We need to get out the idea that
engineering can be creativeand then make it so.
Somehow, we need to teach innovation. But
Sharkey also realizes that few schools have
either the time or the money to reshape their
curricula. So we could use a government
initiative.Sharkey also takes a more long-term
view toward revitalizing engineering enrollments,
noting that its best to capture the imagination
of budding engineers when theyre as young as 10
or 11. Toward that goal, he runs a series of
robot-control and construction competitions for
children and young adults.
43ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Sheri Sheppard - Opening
Doors Six years ago, she founded the Mechanical
Engineering Womens (MEWomen) group to provide a
forum for women to feel more supported and
empowered. Many of the females were coming to
her sad, frustrated or confused, wondering how to
continue, says Ph.D. student Kuchenbecker, a
past president of the group. The organization not
only provides a support group for women, it also
runs a class called Women Perspectives in
Engineering.
44ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT George Stetten He calls music
a wonderful medium for teaching engineering and
electronics concepts. Many electrical, computer,
and mechanical engineering courses are
particularly compatible with music, he says.
Moreover, Stetten thinks that engineering schools
should do more to train students to work in the
multibillion-dollar music industry, which has an
insatiable and growing need for engineers.
45ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Jackie Sullivan -
Environmental Engineer GROWING UP POOR IN A LARGE
FAMILY, UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO PROFESSOR JACKIE
SULLIVAN FORGED A REMARKABLY SUCCESSFUL CAREER,
FROM CLIMBING THE CORPORATE LADDER AT EDS TO
TURNING YOUNGSTERS ON TO ENGINEERING. "I
subscribe to the concept that there is no I' in
team'." The team is an energetic band of fellow
professors, graduate students, and staff that
orchestrate one of the most imaginative
engineering-outreach programs. Offerings include
classes where Native American high schoolers
build stereo speakers, "Girls Embrace Technology"
camps, --and these are just a summer sampling.
46ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT John Viator - Biomedical
Engineer - Listening for Cancer's Early
Warning John Viator has an ear for skin cancer.
Literally. Viator, a biomedical engineering
professor at the University of Missouri,
Columbia, fashioned the listening device out of a
laser, special microphones and a computer
interface. And while the setup doesnt look much
like an earViator calls it a photoacoustic
detection systemhe thinks it can help doctors
listen in on deadly melanoma cells as they
spread throughout the bloodstream.
47ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT Oksana Wall - Civil Engineer,
Walt Disney Wall has worked for three years as a
project engineer for Disneys Ride Show
Engineering Group. Shes worked on such
attractions as Rock n Roller Coaster, Splash
Mountain, and Fantasmic. More recently, she
helped with the installation of the
Mini-Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh at Disneyland
in California. Of course, Walt Disney Resort
theme parks arent the only shows in town. There
are many other theme parks around the country
that require top-notch engineering skills, as
well as many engineering firms that specialize in
amusement-park attractions. I have a blast at my
job.
48ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT David Wormley - A Man of
Vision We have to have strong cooperation
between science and engineering faculties with
K-12 students and teachers so students get an
appreciation of how they can contribute to
society by a career in engineering. This has to
happen early because we are already losing
students by middle school and junior high.
