CIVIL WAR FACTS
  • 3,000,000 People fought in the war.
  • In two days at Shiloh, more americans fell than
    in all the previous wars combined.
  • At the Battle of Antietam, there were 23,000
    casualties, the bloodiest single day of the civil
    war.
  • At Cold Harbor, VA 7,000 people died or were
    wounded in 20 minutes.
  • However, disease was the chief killer of the war.
    It took 2 men to every 1 killed of battle
    wounds.

EFFECTS OF THE WAR
  • PHYSICAL TOLL
  • 9,000 Miles of railroad destroyed
  • Farm land, farm buildings, and farm machinery
    were devoured.
  • 1/3 of all livestock killed
  • Factories, ports, and cities lay smoldering.
  • Value of southern land decreased 70
  • HUMAN TOLL
  • North lost 364,000 men
  • South lost 260,000 men (1/5 of the adult white
    male population
  • Children were orphaned and brides were widowed

Postwar south
  • Made up of 3 major groups of people who faced
    pressing issues
  • Black Southerners
  • 4 million newly freed people started their new
    lives with nothing!!!
  • Attempted to find loved ones sold to someone
    else.
  • Many found themselves homeless, jobless, hungry.
  • Plantation Owners
  • Lost slave labor worth about 3 BILLION
  • Poor White Southerners
  • Now have to compete with newly freedmen.

Lincolns Reconstruction Plan
  • Pardon any confederate who would take an oath of
    allegiance.
  • Denied pardons to Confederate military and
    government officials who had killed African
    American war prisoners.
  • Permitted each state to create a new state
    constitution only after 10 of the voters in the
    state swore allegiance to the Union.
  • Lincoln did not readmit states since in his
    mind, their secession had not been constitutional.

Andrew Johnson Takes over
  • Johnsons reconstruction plan.
  • Pardoned southerners who swore allegiance to the
    Union
  • Permitted each state to hold a constitutional
    convention (Without Lincolns 10 requirement).
  • States were to void secession, abolish slavery,
    and repudiate the confederate debt.
  • States could than hold elections and rejoin the
    union.

Andrew Johnson
  • In his lifetime Andrew Johnson, the son of a
    tailor, occupied every major non-judicial elected
    office in the American political system - city
    councilman, mayor, state representative, state
    senator, Governor, Representative, Senator,
    Vice-President, and President. He is the only
    person to have held all of those positions.
