William Penn His Beliefs

• William Penn was a member of the Society of
  Friends or Quakers.
• The Quakers believed that all people were equal.
• Quakers were also against violence and believed
  in solving problems peacefully.

• In 1681, the English King established a charter
  which made Penn proprietor of Pennsylvania
• Pennsylvania means Penns Woods
• Pennsylvania was to be a place of refuge and
  religious freedom

• The Quakers wanted to live peacefully with
  existing tribes.
• Penn established a Great Treaty with the
  Delaware Indians, in order to purchase land.
