6Barrel Toroid
7Lowering of BT Coil
- First BT coil arrives at Point 1 on Oct 20th 2004
- Lowered into cavern Oct 21st.
8BT Coil casing transport
9BT trials in May
10BT Trials in May
11BT Coil Installation
12BT Coil Installation
13First Coil installation
14BT Installation drawing
15Coils connection box assembly
16Warm structure assembly
Most critical connection is 6 and 7
All bolted connections compliant with Eurocode 3
Using sand blasted surfaces to increase friction
co-efficient.
Will use strain gauges etc to corroborate FEA
calcs.
17Top coils support
18Barrel toroid Assembled
19BT Assembly plus muon rail positions
20Barrel Toroid Installation Structures
21Gangways in BT
- The brackets for the access gangways in the BT
coil will be installed where possible as the coil
is assembled. - After removing the BT coil jacks, and the barrel
calorimeter put into position, the gangways and
barrel muons will be installed as the BT assembly
platforms are removed. - Prototype platform received from Pakistan.

23Gangways in BT
24Barrel Calorimeter
25Barrel calorimetry
- Activities on truck C
- Approx 50 of the Tile Calorimeter assembled.
- Installing now on the lower half all calorimeter
cable trays, cooling pipes, cryostat
supports, CS sources pipes, some cables. - Lower the barrel cryostat on Oct 26th
- Complete the mechanical installation of the Tile
Calorimeter - Trial movement of Barrel Calorimeter (1 metre)
- Install on the upper half all possible calo
services - Install and then partially remove all ID cables
supports on the calorimeter surface and front
faces, including all possible pipes - Install the LAr electronics racks and start the
electronics cards installation and commissioning - Commission the tiles drawers electronics
- Prepare all hardware to move the calorimeter
inside - Move barrel calorimeter into BT (August 2005)
26Cryostat in Building 180
27Barrel Cryostat to be lowered on Oct 26th
28LAr cryostat installation
A cradle will be used in the pit for LAr
positioning
29Barrel movement system
Aim to have trial move March 2005
30End Cap Calorimeter Assembly
Ready for installation in cavern
31Barrel Muon Chambers
32Muon barrel 1st Phase installation Jan 2005
- First phase installation planned for muon
chambers in feet region. - Will consist of all BMF, 4 - BOF, 6 - BOG in
sectors 12 and 14. - Maybe some BML and BOL in sector 13 (depends on
truck position). - Feet region very complex detail design with small
clearances between chambers and feet. - Installation has to be quick as on critical path.
- Access is complicated over the large volume
occupied by muon chambers. - Will try and put as many brackets and rails in as
building up the BT. But there will be final
adjustment of brackets and rails after jacks
removed from BT. - Task force working on variations of installation
sequence/methods to save time in schedule.

36Muon Barrel Installation
37BMS Installation options (part of task force
study)
Using crane and during BT assembly. Saves time
but risk of damage
Using tooling from BML rail.
38Services
39Services
- As much as possible of the services that run
along the barrel calorimeter surface to Z zero
will be added while the calorimeter is on the
truck. - At present services are being installed on the
lower half. - When cryostat installed and top half of
calorimeter completed then services installation
will continue. - Elsewhere services are being added-
- Calorimeter services from USA15 to HS.
- ID Type 4 services from HS to USA15 and US15
- Magnet bus-bar installation on HS and gallery to
USA15 - Cryo lines to Zzero.
- Start equipping racks in USA15
- Start installing racks on HS.

47Conclusions
- Between mid Oct and Xmas 2004 very critical
period for the installation of Atlas. - Installation of two BT coils.
- Lowering of Barrel cryostat and build up of
calorimeter. - Now know BT availability in more detail.
- Planning to complete the BT by July/August 2005.
- Install barrel calorimeter by end August 2005.
- Not having components (inc small items e.g.
bolts) on time and in right place will cause many
delays. - As the toroid is assembled aiming for-
- early installation of services.
- early installation of muon chambers in the lower
sector - preparation for the ID cables installation.
