Physical Characteristics
  • The Sumatran Orangutans are smaller than Borean
    Orangutans.
  • They have thick sometimes long, light red hair.
  • Sumatran Orangutans are taller than Borean
    Orangutans.
  • Males grow cheek pads and/or shaggy beards while
    they are subadults.
  • They are more slender and have narrower faces
    than Borean Orangutans.
  • Have very flexible lips and have hands that are
    like humans, and use feet like their hands.

Physical Characteristics
  • Males are a lot heavier than female orangutans.
  • ALL orangutans are very acrobatic.
  • Orangutans are a type of great ape.
  • Have very strong teeth and jaws.

Adaptations
  • Orangutans have long, strong arms making it easy
    to climb and peel food.
  • They also have strong jaws making it easy to eat
    bamboo and nuts.
  • Orangutans have 2 legs which they use like hands,
    legs are very helpful when climbing trees or
    walking on the ground.
  • Their weight is also an adaptation because they
    can bend over to get from tree to tree

Energy Predator Prey Relationships
  • One of the Orangutans predators are Sumatran
    tigers, leopards, and of course humans
  • When they confronted with one of these predators
    they usually can escape into trees
  • They eat mainly fruit. Their favorite being
    Durian.
  • When fruit is scarce they feed on leaves, bark,
    tree layers beneath the bark, some grasses, ants,
    caterpillars, honey and are know to eat squirrels
  • They drink in the hollows of trees, tree branches
    instead if going to the ground

Behavior in regards to seasonal changes
  • Our animal an orangutan does not change during
    the seasons. This is because in the rain forest,
    there are no different seasons except for drops
    and raises in rain fall.

  • The rain forest is the orangutans natural habitat
  • This habitat is a wet, green jungle that is full
    of other life besides the orangutans
  • The rain forests trees can be far apart or
    really close together making it easy to walk
    across
  • These fascinating forest are found near the
    equator.
  • The rainforest covers only 7 of the earths land
    surface
  • The orangutans live in the rain forest of
    Indonesia islands of Borneo and Sumatra

  • The orangutan does not take part in any symbiosis
    because they are solitary organisms.

    different types of plants
  • When male orangutans call to females their call
    can be heard from half a mile and can last up to
    3 minutes
  • Mom orangutans can use themselves as bridges to
    help the child get across trees safely.
  • Orangutans are bad swimmers so to test the depth
    of the water they take a stick and push it down
    into the water.

  • The area in which an orangutan lives is called
    its home range. Usually it is very large.
  • As a baby orangutan gets older it starts to ride
    on its mothers back.
  • Male dont mature until they are 10.
  • Females mature at age 7, but dont give birth
    until 10 years old.
  • Orangutans can live as long as 50 years old.
  • Are born live not in eggs.
  • Orangutans win a gold trophy for being the
    largest animal that spends most of its life in
    the trees
