• These are some physical features of the northwest
  region.
• It has the really tall Rocky Mountains.
• There is a big river that runs under a big
  glacier.

Plants

• Tall cedar trees grow in many places.
• There are spruce trees and spruce bark.

Climate

• This is the climate.
• In winter it is very very cold. In summer it is
  not that warm.

Animals

• Animals found in the ocean are killer whales,
  sea otters, and crabs.
• The land animals are deer, rabbits and bear.
• Eagles and ravens can be found floating in the
  sky.

Food

• Here are some plants the Tlingits eat roots,
  seaweed, fungus, nuts, berries, acorns and camas
  bulbs.
• These are some animals the Tlingits eat bear,
  rabbits, and deer.

• They gathered food from the sea like fish, seals,
  sea otters, walruses, crab and cod.
• They harpooned seals, sea otters, walruses and
  sea lions.

Shelter

• Men built clan houses for 30-40 people.
• Clan houses are made out of cedar boards or other
  trees.
• There were fires in the center and the clan
  shared the fire.

Clothing

• Children wore goat hair and animal skins.
• The men wore a bone in their nose shaped like a
  ring.
• They had stiff hats made of cloth and rope.

• The Bear clan leader has to wear a hat that looks
  like a mask.
• Women wove blankets, mats, and baskets. They
  knitted socks.

• The Europeans wanted fur from sea otters.
• Europeans brought new diseases over.
• Then they both got sick and died.

• The Tlingit children had to speak English and
  had to wear European clothes.
• The Europeans wanted them to be Christians.
• They took land from the Tlingits.

• They used totem poles to support their doors.
• The carving on the totem poles are stories about
  their tribe.
• Raven clan married the Eagles clan.
• Men hunted land animals including bear, caribou,
  deer, elk, and moose.

• The Tlingits now respect the land and sea.
• They work in all kinds of jobs.

• They made clan art like totem poles and jewelry.
• The Tlingits painted wooden masks.
• They carved common animals like ravens,
  thunderbird, eagle, wolf, killer whales, and
  bear.
