Title: Counting the cost of following Jesus

Counting the cost of following Jesus
2
Luke 1427 "And whoever does not bear his cross
and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 "For
which of you, intending to build a tower, does
not sit down first and count the cost, whether he
has enough to finish it -- 29 "lest, after he
has laid the foundation, and is not able to
finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30
"saying, 'This man began to build and was not
able to finish.' 31 "Or what king, going to make
war against another king, does not sit down first
and consider whether he is able with ten thousand
to meet him who comes against him with twenty
thousand? 32 "Or else, while the other is still
a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks
conditions of peace. 33 "So likewise, whoever of
you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My
disciple.
3
Matthew 1624 "If anyone desires to come after
Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross,
and follow Me. 25 "For whoever desires to save
his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life
for My sake will find it. 26 "For what profit is
it to a man if he gains the whole world, and
loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in
exchange for his soul?
4
John 647 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who
believes in Me has everlasting life. 48 "I am
the bread of life. 49 "Your fathers ate the
manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 "This
is the bread which comes down from heaven, that
one may eat of it and not die. 51 "I am the
living bread which came down from heaven. If
anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever
and the bread that I shall give is My flesh,
which I shall give for the life of the world."
52 The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves,
saying, "How can this Man give us His flesh to
eat?" 53 Then Jesus said to them, "Most
assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh
of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have
no life in you.
5
54 "Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has
eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last
day. 55 "For My flesh is food indeed, and My
blood is drink indeed. 56 "He who eats My flesh
and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.
57 "As the living Father sent Me, and I live
because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will
live because of Me. 58 "This is the bread which
came down from heaven -- not as your fathers ate
the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread
will live forever." 59 These things He said in
the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.
6
John 660 Therefore many of His disciples, when
they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying
who can understand it?" 61 When Jesus knew in
Himself that His disciples complained about this,
He said to them, "Does this offend you? 62 "What
then if you should see the Son of Man ascend
where He was before? 63 "It is the Spirit who
gives life the flesh profits nothing. The words
that I speak to you are spirit, and they are
life. 64 "But there are some of you who do not
believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who
they were who did not believe, and who would
betray Him. 65 And He said, "Therefore I have
said to you that no one can come to Me unless it
has been granted to him by My Father." 66 From
that time many of His disciples went back and
walked with Him no more.
7
John 667 Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you
also want to go away?" 68 But Simon Peter
answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You
have the words of eternal life. 69 "Also we have
come to believe and know that You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God."
8
John 831 "If you abide in My word, you are My
disciples indeed. 32 "And you shall know the
truth, and the truth shall make you free."
9
Luke 121 In the meantime, when an innumerable
multitude of people had gathered together, so
that they trampled one another, He began to say
to His disciples first of all, "Beware of the
leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2
"For there is nothing covered that will not be
revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. 3
"Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark
will be heard in the light, and what you have
spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be
proclaimed on the housetops. 4 " And I say to
you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who
kill the body, and after that have no more that
they can do. 5 "But I will show you whom you
should fear Fear Him who, after He has killed,
has power to cast into hell yes, I say to you,
fear Him!
10
James 21 My brethren, do not hold the faith of
our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with
partiality. 2 For if there should come into your
assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel,
and there should also come in a poor man in
filthy clothes, 3 and you pay attention to the
one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, "You
sit here in a good place," and say to the poor
man, "You stand there," or, "Sit here at my
footstool," 4 have you not shown partiality
among yourselves, and become judges with evil
thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brethren Has God
not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in
faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised
to those who love Him?
11
6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not
the rich oppress you and drag you into the
courts? 7 Do they not blaspheme that noble name
by which you are called? 8 If you really fulfill
the royal law according to the Scripture, "You
shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do
well 9 but if you show partiality, you commit
sin, and are convicted by the law as
transgressors.
12
Luke 12 22 Then He said to His disciples,
"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your
life, what you will eat nor about the body, what
you will put on. 23 "Life is more than food, and
the body is more than clothing. 24 "Consider the
ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have
neither storehouse nor barn and God feeds them.
Of how much more value are you than the birds?
25 "And which of you by worrying can add one
cubit to his stature? 26 "If you then are not
able to do the least, why are you anxious for the
rest? 27 "Consider the lilies, how they grow
they neither toil nor spin and yet I say to you,
even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed
like one of these.
13
28 "If then God so clothes the grass, which today
is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the
oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of
little faith? 29 "And do not seek what you
should eat or what you should drink, nor have an
anxious mind. 30 "For all these things the
nations of the world seek after, and your Father
knows that you need these things. 31 "But seek
the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be
added to you. Luke 1234 "For where your
treasure is, there your heart will be also.
14
Luke 1251 "Do you suppose that I came to give
peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but
rather division. 52 "For from now on five in one
house will be divided three against two, and two
against three. 53 "Father will be divided
against son and son against father, mother
against daughter and daughter against mother,
mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and
daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."
15
1 Peter 41 Therefore, since Christ suffered for
us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the
same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh
has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should
live the rest of his time in the flesh for the
lusts of men, but for the will of God. 3 For we
have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing
the will of the Gentiles -- when we walked in
lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking
parties, and abominable idolatries. 4 In regard
to these, they think it strange that you do not
run with them in the same flood of dissipation,
speaking evil of you. 5 They will give an
account to Him who is ready to judge the living
and the dead.
16
Acts 1038 God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with
the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about
doing good and healing all who were oppressed by
the devil, for God was with Him.
17
Galatians 220 "I have been crucified with
Christ it is no longer I who live, but Christ
lives in me and the life which I now live in the
flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who
loved me and gave Himself for me.
