Alternative opportunities for cotton production
  • Problem
  • Cotton was a strategic crop for Soviet
Tajikistan, it is not anymore for independent
    Tajikistan
  • Cotton has not anymore a high return.
  • World market trends show that with the use
of more than 70 of imported inputs for cotton
    production Tajikistan can not produce
    economically profitable and environmentally
    friendly cotton.
  • The monoculture of cotton in irrigated area will
increase degradation of the respective areas
  • Just selling of raw cotton will increase the
    cotton debt.
  • Other crops can make it better if the impulses
are provided and market outlets are developed

Alternative opportunities for cotton production
  • Suggestions
  • To decrease the area of cotton production to 150
000 ha.Only most suitable farms and areas.
  • Developing cotton processing facilities can
increase the economic returns from cotton
    production.
  • Diversification and crop rotation will have more
economical benefits than from monoculture cotton
    production, such as
  • Fodder and leguminous plants,
  • Vegetable crops and orchards
  • Developing processing and marketing are very
    essential for alternative crops.
