DNA
  • DNA was discovered about 100 years ago by
    Friederich Miescher. DNA is the material inside
    your body that holds genetic information. The
    nucleus holds your DNA inside cells in the body.
    DNA is also long and stringy when you look at it
    closely.

To find DNA I'm going to do anexperiment
  • Materials used in experiment
  • A medium sized onion, a knife and cutting board,
    a blender, salt, a strainer or sleeve,
    dishwashing liquid or clear shampoo, two 12oz. or
    more glasses or jars, masking tape, something to
    write with, spoons, and a stick, meat tenderizer,
    rubbing alcohol, coffee filter.

STEP 1
  • Chop an onion into small chunks and put it in the
    blender.

  • Add a teaspoon of salt and twice as much water as
    the onion mixture. Blend for about 10 seconds.
    You should end up with a mushy mixture.

  • Label two clear glasses with masking tape. Write
    control on one and liquid soap and enzymes on
    the other.

  • Strain the onion slush by poring it through a
    strainer or sleeve.

  • Fill between one-third and one-half of each glass
    with the onion juice. Pour the same amount into
    each.

  • Add dishwashing liquid, one-sixth the amount of
    the onion juice to the glass labeled liquid soap
    and enzymes.

  • Add a half teaspoon meat tenderizer to the glass
    labeled liquid soap and enzymes.

  • Stir gently and wait ten minutes. Dont stir too
    hard or you will break the long fragile DNA
    molecules. Use a different spoon to stir each
    glass.

  • SLOWLY, pour alcohol into each glass. The amount
    of alcohol in each glass should be equal to the
    mixture in the glass. Dont stir!

  • You should see alcohol floating on top of your
    onion mixture. After few minuets stringy globs
    will appear in it. THATS THE DNA!

  • Slowly swirl a stick through the alcohol. DNA
    clumps should stick to it. You can then lift them
    up for a closer look. Go ahead and touch the DNA
    but wash the slimy stuff off your hands after
    ward.

MY CONCLUSION
  • From making a DNA model, I learned that DNA
    is very useful to decipher the genetic code of
    the living object. I also learned that you can
    take one cell and break it down into chromosomes
    and stretch it so that you can see how DNA
    strand is created. By looking at each strand you
    could see how the nucleotides make each cell
    different in its own way. As a result of finding
    DNA farmers can improve their crops by using
    different seeds and finding the best type of seed
    for that region. DNA can also be altered to make
    plants insect resistant.
