The Return of Andrew JacksonActually he never
really went away
  • A new party was born The Democratic Republicans
    (the forerunner of todays Democratic party).
  • New Campaigning parades, barbecues, events,
    rallies, newspaper propaganda
  • Jacksons western roots helped secure the newest
    western votes.
  • 1828 Election drew 3X as many votes as 1824,
    Jackson won easily.

Jacksons Style
  • Disliked political and other special interest
    groups. Consulted his Kitchen Cabinet for
    advice rather than the Secretaries.
  • Highly developed Spoils system.
  • Allied with incoming Irish Catholics, strong
    force in Democratic politics ever since.
  • Vetoed more than any previous president.

Jacksons Indian Policy
  • Removed Indians, Trail of Tears, but did not seek
    to exterminate them as some wished. Signed about
    90 treaties, Indians moved to Oklahoma for as
    long as the grass grows or water runs in peace
    and plenty.

Jackson, Other Issues
  • Tariff of Abomination hurt the southern economy
    resulting in VP Calhouns Nullification Theory.
    If 13 sovereign states formed the C, then each
    state still SOV.
  • South Carolina threatens to secede 1832.
  • Tariffs were gradully lowered.
  • Opposed National Bank. Ended it, but as a result,
    NY Banks became ultra powerful.
