3- California Education Code Section 60800 states
that school districts in California are required
to administer the Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
annually to all students in grades five, seven,
and nine.
4The PFT provides information that can be used
- By students to assess levels of health-related
fitness and to plan personal fitness programs. - By teachers to design curriculum for physical
education classes. - By parents and guardians to understand students
fitness levels. - By teachers, parents, and guardians to monitor
changes in the students fitness levels.
5The FITNESSGRAM
- Was designated by the State Board of Education as
the PFT. - Was developed by The Cooper Institute in Dallas,
Texas. - It is a set of tests designed to evaluate
health-related fitness. - Has as its primary goal that students establish
lifetime habits of regular physical activity.
6What are the fitness areas tested?
- The FITNESSGRAM tests the following six fitness
areas - -Aerobic Capacity (one-mile run)
- -Body Composition (body mass index)
- -Abdominal Strength Endurance (curl-up)
- -Trunk Extensor Strength Flexibility (trunk
lift) - -Upper Body Strength Endurance (push-up)
- -Flexibility ( back-saver sit and reach)
7Performance in each of the fitness areas is
classified into two levels
- Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ)
- Needs Improvement (i.e., not in the HFZ)
- What is passing on the PFT?
8The Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ)
- Is the desired performance standard for each
fitness area. - Represents a level of fitness that offers a
degree of protection against diseases that result
from physical inactivity. - Lets look at the Fitnessgram Standards for
Healthy Fitness Zone
9California Education Code Section 60800 requires
- Annual administration of the Physical Fitness
Test (PFT) to all students statewide in grades
five, seven, and nine. - Students are required to participate whether or
not they are in a physical fitness class. - Administration of the PFT is between February 1st
and April 24th.
10Students with Disabilities
- Students with disabilities who are unable to take
the entire PFT should be given as much of test as
conditions permit.
11Test Coordinator Responsibilities
- The test site coordinator is responsible for the
administration of the PFT within the school site.
The coordinator is also directly responsible for
coordinating all activities pertaining to the
security, distribution, and return of materials,
as well as training all test examiners.

- Student scores will be based on students age on
the date when the first test is administered to
the student. The first day of testing must be
added to each students record. - Mark information clearly
- School and Student ID number must be complete
- Mark zero for no score
- Clean stray marks

- Reason Not Tested or Incomplete Data
- 10 for Absent on test date AND all make-up
sessions - 15-Medical excuse
- 3-Waiver granted by SBE (a waiver by the SBE can
not be used as a reason for incomplete data for
the PFT) - 13-IEP/Special Needs
- 14-Extraordinary Circumstances
- The goal is 100 participation for all students
in grades 5, 7 9
31Results
- Individual and summary results are reported for
each fitness area. - Reports of summary results are provided to the
Governor and the Legislature and are made

- Return all materials for each class with a roster
of students - Please return in envelopes provided
- Materials must be returned by April 27th.

- By percentage of students in the HFZ and
percentage not in the HFZ (i.e., needs
improvement) for each of the six fitness areas. - By percentage of students in the HFZ for 6
through 0 of 6 fitness areas. - By grade for total population, gender, and
ethnicity at state, county, school district, and
school levels.
