Title: CalREN Update

1
CalREN Update
  • Dave Reese, CENIC

2
CalREN Update
  • Recent Developments
  • Looking to the future
  • Operations Status

3
Recent Developments
  • Coachella Valley Fiber Project Extension into
University of Arizona, Arizona State University
  • CSU Campus Access Infrastructure Project

4
Coachella Valley Fiber Project
  • 3.4M grant to build diverse fiber ring through
    Coachella Valley (Palm Springs)
  • Supported by backbone redesign to resolve Los
    Angeles single point of failure
  • The backhoe can be your friend!

5
Coachella/Arizona Design
6
Fiber along the tracks
7
Extending Reach
  • Extending reach requires placing equipment in
    remote amplification/repeater huts
  • Huts are in remote areas, often difficult to find
  • Agua Caliente (Gillespie, AZ)

8
Hunting for the hut
9
CSU Campus Access Infrastructure
  • CSU Systemwide Initiative
  • Greatly Improve Campus access to Backbone
  • Multiple paths from campus to backbone
  • Dramatic increases in network bandwidth
  • Managed Fiber and/or Managed GigE as available

10
Looking to the Future
  • CalREN-DC Upgrades
  • CalREN-HPR XD Upgrades
  • CalREN Optical Backbone Planning

11
CalREN-DC Upgrades
  • CENIC is working on an equipment replacement plan
    to upgrade/update the DC backbone
  • Requirements developed by DC-TAC
  • Engineering plan under development by CENIC Core
    Engineering staff
  • Proposal will be introduced Wed Afternoon

12
Peak Utilization Projections
13
CENIC Peering Success Story
  • gt 70 Networks
  • gt 130 Peering Sessions

14
Major Peering Milestone!
CENIC Peering exceeds paid transit volume
15
ISP Traffic Projections
16
CalREN-HPR XD Upgrades
  • HPR-TAC has been working on network requirements
    document
  • Board XD committee providing input as XD
    requirements
  • HPR-TAC design sub-group working on drafting
    HPR/XD future design
  • Presentation/discussion Thursday, March 16

17
CalREN Optical Backbone
  • CalREN Optical Backbone based upon Cisco 15808
    and 15454 DWDM platform
  • 15808 End-of-Life announced February 2010
  • Defines significant event for completion of
    implementation of new optical backbone
  • Re-design of optical backbone to begin after
development of DC and HPR designs
  • Review of recent optical developments to begin
    this summer
  • 40Gb lambdas, ROADM, electronic dispersion
    compensation, etc.

18
Operations Status
  • Ticket Survey Results
  • Inventory Documentation Project
  • Failure Analysis, Performance Predictors

19
Ticket Survey Results
  • Response time met or exceeded expectations (93)
  • Received communications in a timely manner (93)
  • Time to resolution exceeded or met expectations
    (91)
  • Satisfied or very satisfied with service (93)

20
Ticket Survey Results
21
Ticket Survey Results
  • Higher ratings (gt91) correlate closely with
initial and early communications between NOC
    Engineers and respondents.
  • Lower ratings (85-88) correlate with closing
    communications. Communications primarily via
    email scored lower ratings.
  • These observations helped us to identify areas
    for improvement
  • NOC Engineers will be coached to enhance email
communications, particularly in the areas of
    thoroughness and articulation.
  • To address perceptions of impatience and
follow-through, our procedures confirm through a
ticket update prior to the ticket resolve
notice that the support requester does not have
any outstanding questions or concerns, and that
he or she agrees the problem is resolved.

22
Inventory Project Status
  • Inventory data stored in MySQL database
  • Assets polled nightly
  • Email to NOC if polled differs from stored
  • Display Asset Info
  • This is an ongoing focus for CENIC

23
Failure Analysis
  • FIT (Failures in Time)
  • Failures in 1,000,000,000 hours
  • Failures and replacements tracked in inventory
  • Mean Time to Repair is critical factor in network
    availability

24
9s of Reliability
  • Chart plots reliability against FIT (log scale)
    and MTTR
  • Shows what is necessary to achieve 3-9s up to
    6-9s of network availability

25
Unavailability of Systems
  • Parallel
  • Up U1 U2 Un
  • Serial
  • Us U1 U2 Un

26
Flow of an Optical Path
27
Fiber Availability (per 1,000 miles)
  • Industry Standard
  • 1.5 cuts per year
  • Vendor A
  • Goal is 0.5 cuts per year
  • Actual (2003) 0.69 cuts per year
  • MTTR goal of 6 hours
  • FIT 78,623
  • Unavailability 0.0471738 (99.95 availability)

28
Applying FIT MTTR
  • Must track operational hours BY COMPONENT
    (in-service to out-of-service) as components
    added/replaced
  • Each failure tracked BY COMPONENT
  • Down time tracked BY COMPONENT, identify if
    traffic affecting or not
  • MTTR could actually vary by component
