1
RSD 6110
  • SESSION ONE

2
Jay Rosenbek, Ph.D, BC-ANCDS
  • PROFESSOR
  • Dept of Communicative Disorders
  • Office 2128, PHHP
  • Hours By appointment
  • rosenbek_at_phhp.ufl.edu
  • Materials availablewww.phhp.ufl.edu/rosenbek

3
OBJECTIVES FOR TODAY
  • Introductions
  • Definitions
  • Aims of course
  • Syllabus/expectation
  • Lectures
  • Study purpose statements

4
INTRODUCTIONS
  • Who you are and what you want to be called
  • What your professional degree is
  • What clinical, teaching, research experience you
    have
  • Why you chose rehab science (if you have) and
    University of Florida
  • Expectations of program

5
DEFINITION
  • Rehabilitation is the process by which physical,
sensory, or mental capacities are restored or
    developed (Brandt, Pope, 1997, p. 3)
  • This is achieved not only through functional
change in the person, such as strengthening
injured limbs, but also through changes in the
physical and social environments (Brandt, Pope,
    1997, p. 3)

6
What are the implications of these definitions?
7
AIMS OF COURSE
  • Introduce models of enablement or disablement,
    Rosenbek and Velozo
  • Models, such as one by WHO, comprise multiple
    domains such as impairment
  • May also comprise other critical influences on
the experience of disability and the response to
    treatment
  • Such as environmental and personal variables
  • Will be content of the first test

8
FIRST ASSIGNMENT
  • Next week 3-5 minute power point discussion of
  • Definition of model(s)
  • Contributions of models to science
  • Dont confine self to enablement models
  • These you may decide are not models at all

9
AIMS CONTINUED
  • Provide one scheme for understanding the
    structure of rehab science, Rosenbek
  • Introduce the idea of phases of research
  • Provide multiple schemes for evaluating what is
called level of evidence in rehabilitation
  • Provide an analysis of what else is meant by
    evidence based practice

10
AIMS CONTINUED
  • Offer a discussion of the politics of science by
    Gonzalez-Rothi
  • Provide summaries of the start of the art of
research in the four key programs OT, PT, Rehab
    Counseling, and Communicative Disorder

11
AIMS CONTINUED
  • Discuss the ethics of research and education led
    by Rehabilitation Counseling colleagues
  • A few words about plagiarism in this first
    session
  • Discuss societal, legal and environmental
    barriers to enablement, Pomeranz
  • These lectures will provide content for the last
    test of the class

12
AIMS CONTINUED
  • Introduce the principles, procedures and
    contributions of qualitative, as differentiated
    from quantitative, research, Young
  • Trying to give an overview of models and
    approaches to answering rehab questions
  • Occurred to me that 6110 is the time to introduce
    alternatives

13
AIMS CONTINUED
  • Introduce principles of aspects of public health,
    Andresen
  • The notion is that prevention and population
illness and health interact with the treatment of
    individuals-the domain of rehab science
  • For first time we have a combined degree in PH
    and RS

14
AIMS CONTINUED
  • Introduce you to the research of two RSD
researchers, Behrman, Kautz, who discuss their
research in light of the models
  • New lecture on patient reported outcomes (PRO) by
    Dr. Romero

15
AIMS A DIFFERENT WAY
  • It seems to me there are a number of important
    components to rehabilitation research
  • Ive assembled experts to talk about several
  • Its also important to hear active researchers
  • Much of organization is Boy I wish someone had
told me this stuff early on.

16
SYLLABUS/CLASS BOOK
  • No text
  • Either hard or electronic versions of the
    readings
  • Reading is actually modest
  • Most will be posted on my website
    www.phhp.ufl.edu/rosenbek including this intro

17
CONTENTS
  • Course syllabus is included
  • Documents for first and second lecture
  • Selected portions of Enabling America Brandt and
Pope (Eds). National Academy Press, 1997

18
READINGS ON SITE
  • Brandt Pope. Executive Summary
  • Brandt Pope. Introduction
  • Jette. Common language
  • Nagi. Disability Concepts Revisited
  • Tomsho. Student Plagiarism Stirs Controversy

19
EVALUATION
  • 10 for participation
  • 30 for exam one
  • Exam will be take home, open book and comprise
    three questions
  • Will cover the models

20
EVALUATION II
  • 30 FOR PAPER
  • The paper is max of 12 pages, including
    references, with one inch margins
  • Topic Levels of Evidence in Support of ------
  • Can be any treatment modality you want
  • Will depend on lecture on structure of rehab
    science and your additional reading

21
FORM
  • Formal, paragraphs and not an outline
  • Efficient-12 pages including references
  • Anyone who has not written a paper before needs
to come see me in the next three weeks
  • I will discuss again nearer time for you to start

22
LAST EVAL
  • Two questions composed by our last speaker(s)
  • 30 of your grade

23
PLAGIARISM
  • You cannot lift phrases, sentences, paragraphs
from published work without putting quotes around
    and providing the reference
  • It is not enough to change only one or two words
  • If you have Qs come see me

24
LETS BEGIN
  • Way for me to see where you are
  • I want you to write a purpose statement for a
study you might or are inclined to do.
  • The purpose of this study is

25
PROBLEMS IN SCIENCE
  • Many scientists owe their greatness to not to
their skill in solving problems but to their
    wisdom in choosing them
  • Waste originates in imperfect statement of the
    problem
  • Problems need to be of interest
  • New, if possible
  • Likely to lead somewhere

26
PURPOSE STATEMENT
  • You will keep these till end of semester
  • Now each of you will read yours and well discuss

27
REHAB SCIENCE
  • Not for wimps
  • Good thing to do with your life
  • This program will prepare you to do it
  • Good luck
