SMITH project (Sleep Monitoring In The Home)
2Fundacion CTIC General data
Fundacion CTIC (Information and Communication
Technological Centre) is a private non-profit
institution founded by the Regional Government of
the Principality of Asturias and a Consortium of
regional ICT private companies. Model public
and private participation.
- Working Areas
- Technology (standards and accessibility
principles for web design). - Information Society.
- Research, Development and Innovation.
RD department
In addition, some projects are also being
developed due to their importance in terms of
enabling technologies, know-how and
transversality (e.g. RFID). Other working lines
are not discarded in a near future.

3Project background (1/3)
- There are a number of common sleep problems which
are significant public health issues - Sleep apnea.
- Chronic insomnia, narcolepsy.
- Periodic limb movements and restless legs
syndrome. - Moreover there are a number of chronic conditions
where breathing during sleep is affected (e.g.
pulmonary hypertension, ). - In general, disorders of sleep related breathing
are characterised by a total or partial reduction
of breathing. - At present, there is no widely used technique for
measuring sleep and breathing in the home
environment.
4Project background (2/3)
- In clinical practice, a nasal cannula and the
thoraco-abdominal movements by inductance
plethysmography is the most widely used method to
detect and to characterize the different
breathing events. - Talking about sleep apnea
- Prevalence.
- There are many people undiagnosed.
- Constitutes a significant public health problem.
- Actual diagnosis methods
- Gold Standard overnight polysomnogram.
- Respiratory polygraphy.

14Conclusions
- The non-contact biomotion sensor is a valid way
to measure sleep parameters in the home
environment. - It can measure both breathing and movement
simultaneously. - It is low-cost and robust for users.
- The NC-prototype measures the same information as
the thoracic-abdominal bands do (the quality of
the NC-signal is the same that the SUM signal,
and the NC-signal is valid in all considered
positions). - The NC prototype can be used as the usual method
to detect breathing movements in polysomnography.
New studies will be necessary in the future to
demonstrate if the NC sensor used with a nasal
cannula can characterize apneas, hypoapneas and
flow limitation.
- Viable integration of the wireless NC sensor with
iDTV (BT-Ethernet). - Remote execution of the processing algorithms
(SOA). - HMI based on digital TV (user) and web platform
(medical professionals).
