Aims to provide a safe, modern and sustainable
transportation network for Northern
Ireland. Investment of 3.5 billion over 10 years
- Travelwise NI initiative (launched Oct 2003)
Travelwiseni has been developed to take forward
the promotion of sustainable transport
alternatives.
3Drivers for change ?
Increasing congestion
- 780,000 cars in NI (33 Growth in 10 years)
- 81 of commuters travel to work by
car/van/minibus - 1/3 of journeys lt 1 mile were made by car
Road Safety
- 136 Killed in NI in 2005 (2 x national average)
- 55 Killed to date 2006
Environmental Pollution
- Cars produce 70 of transport related CO2
- Pollution Causes 12-24,000 premature deaths /year
Health
- Lack of physical activity Obesity , Heart
disease - Increased pollution, Asthma, Cancers

Working with all sectors to reduce the impact of
work based car journeys.
Providing FREE site specific advicethrough a
Travel Plan consultancy firm WS Atkins.
Making good progress at sites where there is an
issue eg land currently used for car parking
required for other use.
Travelwise Team is working with larger
organisations eg Hospitals- Specific seminar
hosted for this group.

Companies/Organisations Need a crisis/travel
problem.
Using major road improvement scheme at
M1/Westlink as a vehicle for promoting
alternatives to the car journey by targeting the
value of Travel Plans.
