Project PurposeCredit WSU Design Institute Bob
Scarfo. Professor, and Students
  • The purpose of this project is to design a system
of mixed use streets in the Manito / Cannon Hill
neighborhoods which will facilitate the movement
of alternative transportation throughout the area
using the existing Parks as nodes of destination.
The project was meant to both work in
conjunction with neighborhood members as well as
design with criteria based upon the topics of oil
    depletion, successful aging, and health.

7
Project Objectives
  • Create a system which contributes to
accessibility and beautification of the park
    system.
  • Produce an environment focused on the
    pedestrian.
  • Connect neighborhood, community, and city
    parks systems.
  • Design safe passage areas across arterials
    focused on pedestrians.
  • Create an environment more conducive of social
    interaction.

Reality Checks
  • Often an afterthought in capital programming.
  • Low priority. Lumped with other non-essentials
    like trees, benches, pedestrian refuges.
  • Must be promoted as economic benefit instead of a
cost, contributing to solutions in other areas
social costs of crime, poor health, urban flight.
  • Budget constraints.
