storage tanks. - Provides up to 1 million of financial assurance.
- Funded by a 2 per gallon fee paid by bulk
petroleum distributors.

4Eligible Applicants
- Responsible Persons (RPs)
Owners or operators of petroleum storage tanks
that release product.
Owners of properties where a release from a
petroleum storage tank occurs.
RPs and volunteers include individuals,
partnerships, corporations, municipalities, and
public agencies.

Neither an RP nor a volunteer take corrective
action in response to a request or order of the
MPCA.

Costs associated with contamination encountered
during tank removals may be eligible costs
associated with contamination discovered during
development are not eligible
- Utility projects within public right-of-way

MPCA Request to Take Corrective Action letter
is required if petroleum contamination will

7Abandoned Tanks
- Out of service before December 22, 1988, or out
of service after December 22, 1988, and tank
owner did not know of tanks existence when
property was acquired
- If approved, Petrofund staff hire contractors to
remove tank and conduct required sampling
- Applicant is responsible for any necessary
investigation and cleanup of a release
8Eligible Costs
- Investigation and cleanup of a release from a
petroleum storage tank. - Necessary for corrective action, as identified by
the MPCA. - Up to 90 of total eligible cleanup costs up to
1 million.
Phase I and Phase II costs are not eligible.
Other persons may receive up to 100 of total
eligible costs up to 1 million.

10Program Requirements
- Obtain competitive proposals and bids.
- Use consultants and contractors that are
registered with the Petrofund. - Use the Petrofund-prescribed proposal and cost
summary forms.
11Project Costs
- Only costs necessary to clean up a release from a
petroleum storage tank may be eligible for
reimbursement. - Maintain contact with MPCA and Petrofund staff.
12Application Preparation
- Compile all proposals, bids, invoices, and cost
summary forms. - Fill out the Petrofund application form.
- Submit all of these forms to the Petrofund.
