• 85 are from single parent
• 65 do not have awareness of Native
  Traditions/Cultural
• 60 associated with gangs

• Difficult to find ones places in society
  especially youth. Other American ethic groups
  have similar challenges.

• Erik Erickson, ego-psychologist redefined Freuds
  Theory of stages. Developmental functions by the
  EPIGENTIC PRINCIPLE. This principle says that we
  develop through predetermined unfolding of our
  personalities in eight states (Rose).
• Stage Five (12-18 yrs)
• Adolescence EGO-IDENTITY vs ROLE CONFUSION is a
  psychosocial crisis.
• NSRTC attempts to achieve EGO-IDENTITY and avoid
  ROLE CONFUSION
• Define Ego-identify means knowing who you are
  and how you fit in to the rest of society. It
  requires that you take all youve learned about
  life and yourself and mold it into a unified
  self-image.
• When an adolescent is confronted by ROLE
  CONFUSION he or she is suffering from identity
  crisis. (Who am I) Erikson

• Daily meditation in Native language (corn
  pollen/meal)
• Assignment to Eagle or Sun Clan on admissions
• Cultural time moccasin making, pottery, beadwork,
  corn pouches, shawl, drumming
• Traditional farming and significance to
  traditional value with corn meal/pollen, foods,
  spirit bowl
• Special options school has Native History classes
• Spiritual overnight passes for kiva, blessing
  ways, night chants, medicine men, healing
  ceremonies
• Active sweat lodge with approved facilitators
• Inter-tribal cultural sessions with speakers on
  Rites of Passages, birthing naming ceremony,
  corn/tobacco medicines other topics
• Visits to Tribal Communities

• Integrated with inpatient therapy techniques
• Coping skills and role play with ego-identity
• Awareness of inter-tribal community roles
  Navajo, Pueblo, Apache, Ute
• Lost rituals are learned thru doing and visual
  learning
• Awareness of Native role with family and
  community
• AFTERCARE surveys incorporate questions on
  continuing and maintaining Native identify and
  community presentation.
