Today Extracting DNA from a kiwi!

Everyone needs to collect

• 1 x 25 cm3 measuring cylinder
• 1 knife
• 1 white tile
• 1 glass stirring rod
• ½ kiwi fruit
• Filter paper and funnel
• 2 plastic cups
• 15 ml of 100 ethanol
• 1 teaspoon of salt
• 6 ml green washing up liquid
• 2 boiling tubes
• Black paper

• Cut kiwi into chunks (no need to peel it)

• Take a plastic cup and half fill it with hot tap
  water. Add the salt (1 teaspoon) and the washing
  up liquid (6 ml) to the cup.
• Stir this gently until the salt has dissolved

• Add chopped Kiwi fruit.
• Transfer cup to water bath for 6 mins.
• Stir green mush whilst in water bath with glass
  rod.
• Transfer green solution to ice bath and leave for
  4 mins, keep mashing the goo!!

• Pour goo through filter paper into another cup,
  making sure no bits of kiwi get through.
• Add 3-5 ml of filtrate to boiling tube
• Carefully pour cold 100 ethanol into boiling
  tube. Keep the tube still and wait for DNA to
  appear!!!
