Becoming of
  • After defeating Richard Nixon with 49.55, JFK
    became the 35th president of the United States on
    January 20, 1961 at an age of 43.

A Rough Start
  • Shortly after becoming president, JFK supported a
    covert operation to train Cuban exiles for a
    mission in which they would attempt to overthrow
    Fidel Castro.
  • The mission failed miserably when the U.S failed
    to follow up on its promise of air support for
    the soldiers.
  • All of the soldiers were either killed of
    captured within 48 hours of the invasion
    beginning.
  • JFK was frowned upon by many nations after Castro
    pointed the finger at him.

Increasing Popularity?
  • On September 12,1962, JFK delivered a speech at
    Rice University where he pledged that the United
    States would put a man on the moon Before the
    end of this decade.
  • Seven years later on July 20th,1969, Neil
    Armstrong walked on the moon.

On The Brink Of Nuclear War
  • October 16th, 1962, US intelligence discovers
    that the Russians are building missile sites in
    Cuba, thus beginning the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  • For thirteen days, nuclear war seemed imminent.
  • The US ordered a naval quarantine surrounding
    Cuba.
  • The Soviets retreated agreeing not to continue
    building missiles under the condition that the US
    agree to not attack Cuba.

Civil Rights
  • June 11, 1962, JFK sends the Alabama National
    Guard to Alabama University to protect two
    African-American students who won a court order
    to attend the college.
  • Later that day Kennedy spoke on t.v. in support
    of the Civil Rights Movement

Pressing Towards Peace
  • October 7, 1963, JFK signed the nuclear test ban
    treaty in Washington D.C. saying with our
    courage and understanding enlarged by this
    achievement, let us press onward in quest of
    man's essential desire for peace."

A National Tragedy
  • Nov 21,1963, Kennedy began his tour of Texas.
  • Nov 22, 1963, JFK was shot at 1230 pm while
    riding in his convertible limousine in a
    motorcade through downtown Dallas.
  • Pronounced dead at 1pm.
  • Lee Harvey Oswald was caught 80 minutes later and
    charged with murder.
