Verbal Irony

• Also known as sarcasm
• There is a discrepancy between what is said and
  what is meant
• Your mother is tired of picking up after you but
  says, Would Milord please let me know when it
  pleases him to have his humble servant pick up
  after him?"

Dramatic Irony

• There is a discrepancy between what the character
  knows and what the reader knows
• In Shakespeares Othello, Othello calls his
  friend honest Iago believing him to be a loyal
  follower. The audience knows that Iago is the
  real villain, setting up Othello to become a
  murderer.

Situational Irony

• There is a discrepancy between the expected
  outcome and the actual results
• Arnold Schwarzenegger has been campaigning
  against violent video games. He, however, is
  famous for his violent action films.

examples of each type of irony!

• Your group will be given one of the types of
  irony. Dont let the other groups see it!
• Make a short skit that depicts that type of
  irony. Everyone must have a part in the
  skitwhether they have a speaking part or are a
  prop.
• BE CREATIVE!
• Your classmates have to guess what type of irony
  you are depicting!
