  • First ever trainee for Dan Murphy
  • 6am start, usually done around 4pm
  • herds were typically 50-150 head
  • the exception was 1700 head
  • Todd Wells
  • 1st independent work

  • Check MATT System
  • Check Voicemail
  • Schedule stops on map
  • Make the stops
  • Find charts, records, people
  • Breed cow(s) to desired bull
  • Continue to next stop

Second Half of Field Training
  • Rod Heale, Batavia NY
  • Start 530 am CY heifer facility(4,000 head)
  • Start morning calls around 10am and finish early
  • I worked, Rod Painted
  • Typical farm was anywhere from 50-300 head

My Travels as a BPS
  • 1st stop Geneseo and Douglas Comstock
  • Comstock and his voicemail
  • Extremely large herds, average 1000 head
  • 2nd Stop was near Penn-Yan and Waterloo, NY
  • Dave King, small herds
  • Majority were Mennonite
  • Fairly busy, but not too bad
  • One automatic stop, different rules for different
    members.

  • Slightly confusing records

  • main goal of Map is to improve/unify cows
  • Again we see some PR work

  • sold semen and supplies
  • covered same territory as local BPS, but
    maintained relations with herds who didnt use
    Genex services.
  • had to compete with different competition in
    different areas all over NY.

Back To Breeding

  • Extremely large herds, very close together.
  • rode with them due to scale of herds.
  • started at 6am, but I was housed 45 minutes away.
    It made for some long days.
  • Werent as concerned about heat detection due to
    time.

  • Bred in 3 states in one day
  • MA, CT, NY
  • very small herds, with a lot of travel required
  • no competition, paid some of the highest arm
    services.

  • 7 days a week
  • Use your own vehicle
  • Member skepticism
  • Schedule always changed
  • Inconsistency of days
  • A day off isnt a whole day off

Benefits of the Internship
  • Social skill improvement
  • Became a very good problem solver
  • Better understanding of what I want out of a
    career
  • I GOT PAID
  • Sharpened my AI skills
  • Found out what I was good at and what I wasnt
    good at
