Behaviorist
  • Pavlov was a key theorist in the behavioral
approach to learning. He won the Nobel Prize in
    1904 in Physiology or Medicine.
  • A behaviorist is one who sees learning from a
behaviorist perspective, and views all behavior
as a response to external stimuli.

3
Conditional Reflexes(or Classical Conditioning)
  • Reflex responses (like salivation) that occur
when one is presented with a certain stimulus
unrelated to the reflex. (Pavlovs dog
    experiment)
  • idea of "conditioning" as an automatic form of
learning became a key concept in the developing
specialism of comparative psychology, and the
general approach to psychology that underlay it,
    behaviorism.

4
Classical Conditioning to Treat Phobias
  • So-called Pavlovian training has been used in
many fields, with anti-phobia treatment as but
one example. An important principle in
conditioned learning is that an established
conditioned response decreases in intensity if
the conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented
without the unconditioned stimulus. This process
    is called extinction.
  • In order to treat phobias evoked by certain
environmental situations, such as heights or
crowds, this phenomenon can be used.
  • This process is called systematic desensitization.

5
Educational Impact
  • Pavlovs work paved the way for a new, more
    objective method of studying behavior.
  • Conditioning forms the basis of much of learned
    human behavior.
  • His discovery of the physiology of digestion had
a great impact on behavioral and learning theory.
