Flipping Lake Notes
2
Thermocline
  • A zone where a sharp temperature change from warm
to cold water occurs. In the ocean, below the
thermocline the water is always cold.
  • We will look at the changes of the thermocline in
    a temperate lake or pond.

3
Summer
Warm Water
Thermocline
Cold Water
  • Very Defined water temperature stratification
warm water (less dense) above the thermocline and
    cool water below.

4
Autumn part one
Warm Water
Cold Water
  • As the temperature drops the water temp. drops to
the point where the upper layer of water reaches
the same temp as the water at the thermocline.

5
Autumn part two
Top Water
Nutrients
Bottom Water
Once the water on the surface becomes more dense
than the thermocline it sinks and pushes the
bottom water up to the top carrying nutrients.
This causes a major algae bloom.
6
Winter
Ice
Cold Water
Warmer Water
  • Ice Forms on the surface of the lake and the
water sinks the further from ice the warmer the
    water becomes

7
Spring
Top Water
Nutrients
Bottom Water
.Ice melts and the water is more dense than the
water below. This water sinks and pushes the
bottom water up and causes the lake to flip
again. Spring algae blooms are common because of
the nutrient upwelling.

Destructive Waves Vocab
  • Define the following 3 terms and write (DW) in
    the parenthesis
  • 19. Joule- Amount of energy needed lift 1 Kg of
matter 1 Meter at Sea Level
  • 20. Hurricane- a storm with winds of more than
74 mph and develop in 80 degree water at a depth
    of 150 feet
  • 21. Tsunami- Giant sets of waves produced by
    earthquakes, underwater landslides or volcanic
eruptions. Means Harbor Wave in Japanese
