4Context I Waste Statistics A
5Context II Waste Statistics B
6Context III Projections C
7Solutions I - Waste as a Resource Collecting
Recyclate
8Why I
- There is clearly a need to increase the
extraction rate of recyclate from our waste
streams. - We depend upon two principal players to do
this (i) The Residents of Calderdale (ii)
The Recycling Crews
9Why II
- We considered the position of our Recycling
Crews. (i) What was their motivation to do the
job that they were paid to do? (ii) What
training had they had to support them in their
work? (iii) Would training help them to increase
the tonnages of collected waste? (iv) What
information included in a training scheme would
be of real benefit to the crews.
10How I
- Funding(i) From Defra.(ii) To be a pilot
collaborative project involving other
authorities, with dissemination of outcomes to
other authorities at the conclusion of the work. - Measuring outcomes(i) Knowledge retention(ii)
Attitude - Syllabus development(i) Content(ii)
Level(iii) Method of delivery - Notes
11How II The Syllabus
12How III Course Planning Consultation
- Close planning and consultation is needed with
your contractor or in house collection management
team. - Plan jointly
- Telling the staff about our intentions
- We discussed the issues widely including
- (i) WRAP
(i) Bradford MDC (ii)
WAMITAB (iii) City Guilds
(iv) National Vocational
Standards - NVQ issues
13How IV
- Training periods (i) Who would deliver the
course? (ii) Where would the course be
delivered? - (iii) Frequency time of delivery (iv)
Method of delivery (v) Measuring the outcomes
14Format Structure Some Slide Samples
-
- Here follow some sample slides from the
course. - The slides were produced by an external
consultant especially for the course.

27What Happens to Recyclate?
What Happens To Recyclate? Week 9
28Plastics Recycling
- Many advantages to recycling plastics
- Recycling household plastic is very expensive
- Low weight doesnt help recycling targets!
- Mechanical recycling
- Sort plastic by hand
- Reform plastic or shred
- Feedstock recycling
- Gasification or pyrolysis can be used
- Very expensive way of doing it
- Degradable plastics
- Breakdown over time or in certain conditons
- Bio-plastics
- Made from plant sugars!
29Types of Plastic
30.News Flash on Glass.
boil water for 5 drinks by recycling 2 bottles!
every house uses 330 glass containers each year!
milk bottles re-used up to 20 times!
over 50,000 bottle banks across the UK!
31Types of Metal
- Ferrous and nonferrous
- Ferrous metals include scrap iron and steel
- Nonferrous metals include anything other than
iron or steel e.g. aluminium, copper, lead etc - Home or purchased scrap metal
- Home scrap metal is material used and re-used at
the foundry - Purchased scrap metal is anything collected and
taken elsewhere for recycling or re-use - Most familiar type of scrap metal is what you
collect from the doorstep e.g. drinks and food
cams - Many councils also collect aerosols and aluminium
foil too!
32.News Flash on Metal.
recycle 1kg of aluminium and save 14kWh of
electricity!
recycle an aluminium can and run the TV for 3
hours!
every year in the UK we use 600 million
aerosols!
75 of drinks cans sold in the UK are made from
aluminium!
only 6 to 8 weeks to recycle an aluminium can
and get it back in the shop!

Waste Management Monitoring Week 10
37Results I A Typical Tick Test
38Results II
- All our crews passed the exam
- The final exam was under exam conditions using
three papers - A 20 percent difference has been noted between
those who have done the course and those who have
not.

- Most operatives preferred the managers to deliver
the course - Early morning course attendance held up the rest
of the day - Some discussion to extensive round and round in
circles. - Less of a course more of a question and answer
session. - Videos needed
- Wider brief than they first expected - some
wanted others not
41Outcomes III Attitude Survey

ideal situation
42Outcomes IV Attitude Survey
- Post Training
- No major changes in attitude but !!!
- Better understanding of reuse and recycle
- The public are the most important people I meet
- Try to have a good relationship with each
household - Course well received
- The course encourages some staff to think about
how to improve . - The majority said it had made their job more
interesting
43Future Developments
- Calderdale is planning an awards ceremony to
present Certificates of achievement to the
participants. - Our contractor FOCSA Services UK Ltd are now
going to put all the Calderdale staff through the
course. - The course is to be placed on the Defra web site
for local authorities to use as they wish. - Future Funding?
