What is a Bursary?
  • Bursaries are based primarily on financial need.
    Some bursaries may include other selection
    criteria such as extracurricular involvement,
    leadership, etc. Bursaries are meant to
    supplement, not replace, students' primary
    sources of funding such as student loans, other
    provincial financial assistance, employment
    income, and parental/spousal contributions.

How to apply
  • Most scholarship applications require
  • Essays this is your opportunity to sell
    yourself, describe community involvement you have
    had including volunteer experiences, extra
    curricular activities, work experience, academic
    achievements and personal accomplishments
  • References this can be a teacher,
    employer, coach, mentor, or community leader that
    will advocate for your community involvement and
    accomplishments

Alexander Rutherford Scholarships for High School
Achievement
  • Sponsored by Alberta Scholarship Programs.
  • Purpose To recognize and reward academic
    achievement at the senior high school level and
    to encourage students to pursue post-secondary
    studies.
  • Value Up to 2,500
  • Eligibility Applicants must be a Canadian
    Citizen or Permanent Resident and an Alberta
    resident and plan to enroll or be enrolled
    full-time in a post-secondary program or
    apprenticeship program.
  • Selection A student must have a minimum combined
    average based on five designated courses in at
    least one grade Grade 10, 11 or 12. The minimum
    average, value of the award, and courses that can
    be used depend on the year the student graduated.

  • Application forms are also available from Alberta
    Scholarship Programs and at all Alberta High
    Schools.
  • Deadline For 2008, the application deadline is
    extended to June 1 to accommodate the recent
    changes to the scholarship. The December 1
    application deadline for January start date will
    remain as is.
  • Disbursement The award is issued in November for
    students who applied by June 1 and in late March
    for students who applied by December 1.
