Title: Plantlike and Fungilike Protists

1
Plant-like and Fungi-like Protists
2
Plant-like Protists
  • Definition Most are unicellular
    photosynthetic organisms, some are multicellular,
many are highly motile (get around)
  • Classification Type of photosynthetic pigments

3
Unicellular Plant-like Protists
  • Euglenophytes Plant-like protist (can also live
as heterotrophs), 2 flagella, no cell wall
  • Found in ponds lakes
  • Eyespot to sense light
  • Reproduce by binary fission
  • Use contractile vacuole to expell water
  • Pellicle (cell membrane) is tough, flexible, but
    no cell wall

4
Euglena

2. Dinoflagellates
  • 50 Photosynthetic, 50 Heterotrophic
  • Have 2 flagella
  • Luminescent
  • Have DNA, but its not tightly bound with histones

Dinoflagellate
10
Chrysophytes
  • Yellow-green golden brown algae
  • Some contain pectin rather than cellulose
  • Store food as oil instead of starch
  • Reproduce asexually sexually
  • Most are solitary, but some are colonial

11
Diatoms
  • Walls are rich in silicon (found in glass)
  • May have a two-part structure
  • Dont easily decompose (used in cleansers and
    toothpastes think gritty feeling)

Multicellular Algae
  • Red algae
  • a. Phylum Rhodophyta
  • b. Chlorophyll Chlorophyll a phycobilin
    (reddish pigment)
  • c. Habitat Deep water, polar to tropics

Multicellular Algae
  • 2. Brown Algae
  • a. Phylum Phaeophyta
  • b. Chlorophyll A C, fucoxanthan
  • c. Habitat most are marine, found in cool,
shallow coastal waters of temperate or arctic
    areas

Multicellular Algae
  • 3. Green Algae
  • a. Phylum Chlorophyta (cellulose cell walls,
chlorophyll a b, store food as starch) VERY
    MUCH LIKE PLANTS
  • b. Chlorophyll a b
  • c. Habitat fresh saltwater, some areas on
    land, most are unicellular

Human Uses for Algae
  • a. Produces oxygen, responsible for ½ of ALL
    photosynthesis on Earth
  • b. Used to make medicines, hi in vitamin C and
    iron
  • c. Used for foods such as ice cream, pancake
    syrup, eggnogs, and agar

23
Fungi-like Protists
  • Definition
  • Heterotrophs (absorb nutrients from dead or
decaying organic matter), have centrioles, lack
chitin in cell walls (chitin is found in TRUE
    fungi)
  • Examples
  • Slime molds
  • Water molds
