Introduction
  • Background
  • SLS 1501 had been previously
  • taught for freshmen (who had not declared a
major) as an Intro to College course.

3
Introduction
  • A large component of the course was researching
an academic discipline so undeclared students
    would potentially choose a major.

4
Problem
  • We now would like to open the course up to all
freshmen and increase the number of sections.

5
Goals and Objectives
  • The main goal is to evaluate the course and
revise its objectives. Upon initial review of
the course description our goal is to help
first-year students develop and master life
skills that are necessary to adjust to college
life while ensuring their success throughout the
    first year.

6
Goals and Objectives
  • Using Chickerings theory on Student Development
as our guide, we want students to master the
basics competencies that all first-year students
should have to succeed in college.

7
Goals and Objectives
  • It is also our intention to develop a
  • training program for faculty and a
  • resource packet of teaching materials
  • with the purpose of preserving
  • course content consistency in SLS
  • classes.

8
Changes Required
  • A common course syllabus that will outline each
    weeks topics.
  • Select a textbook that will meet the needs of the
    stated goals.
  • Develop a standard lesson plan notebook for
faculty that includes activities / exercises for
    each topic
  • Develop a series of workshops to train the
faculty on how to engage first-year students in
the learning process and on relevant first-year
    issues.
  • Increase the use of technology in the class.

9
