- The Hebrew and Greek word most often translated
as sin is chataah and harmatia meaning
missing the mark as in an archery competition - There are many other words used, but these are
the most common

God

8Metaphor 1 Teacher Students
- At the beginning of a semester students begin
with a mark of 100 - As the semester progresses students fail to
maintain the teachers standards - The students mark suffers and they face the
consequences
9I came that they may have life, and have it
abundantly

- At the beginning of life our health for the most
part is at 100 - As life progresses humans fail to maintain the
doctors outline of a healthy lifestyle - The patients health suffers and they face the
consequences
11Those who are well have no need of a physician,
but those who are sick I have come to call not
the righteous but sinners to repentance.
12Sin and its effects are visible everywhere in
exploitive relationships, loveless families,
crime, opression, etc.
13Outside the Garden of Eden
- From birth we are influenced by the state of sin
that exists in the world - As we mature we make a conscious decision to
accept and be a part of sin - The meaning stories in Genesis teach us that we,
not God, are responsible for evil - We must take responsibility for the state we are
in - We must take responsibility for refusing to do
Gods will (agape) and missing the mark
14Conditions for Sin
- All 3 of the conditions must be present
- Sufficient knowledge or reflection
- Full consent of will
- Serious mattercauses real evil to myself of
another person. Often gravity of the evil
15Degrees of Sin
- Mortal a complete break in ones relationship
with God - Venial not a complete break from God, but
represents a cooling in the relationship - Social offend human dignity

18And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at
your door its desire is for you, but you must
master it.
