Project Overview
Student Deliverables
Action Plan Implementation Schedule
Students will work in groups of three to create
an electric generator used to charge a cell
phone. The generators input must be a readily
available renewable resource and its output must
be appropriate for the target cell phone.
Students will document their work as they follow
the Engineering Design Process and will present
the science, their process, and their results in
a formal poster session.
1) Full Documentation of EDP in Engineering
Notebook 2) Final Prototype Poster Outlining
personal EDP and Prototype 3) Presentation of
Poster and Defense of Prototype
This project will occur within the first month
of school, after short intro projects focusing on
group work. 3 Total Weeks - Introduce the
Engineering Design Process- 1 period. -
Introduce the Design Challenge- 1/2 prd - Review
Electromagnetism and EM Induction- 1/2 prd -
Student Research and Initial Design Phase- 3 prds
- Establish Groups, Design/Build/Testing Phase-
7 prds - Presentation Preparation- 2 prds -
Presentations Poster and Defense of Prototype - 1
prd Rearrange timeline based on
weekend availability
Project Goals
1) Introduce students to the Engineering Design
Process and set a precedent for future
project procedure. 2) Directly address the
difficulty students have with the concept
of Electromagnetic Induction. Secondary
Goals ?????Students will research what is
involved in the generation of electrical
energy, something they use every day.
????Student creation of a green energy source
will expose them to current
challenges/opportunities in the energy
industry.
Student Outcomes
Overarching ?Students will recognize the
importance of an organized approach to
problem solving including documentation. ?Students
will find value in each step of the Engineering
Design Process ?Students recognize the
interdependent nature of the EDP steps. ?Students
will find value in seeking out green solutions to
problems. They will add sustainability to
the list of important factors when
creating and testing the viability of a solution
to a problem. Project ?Students will
utilize the Engineering Design Process as
cohesive unit. ?Students will accurately
define each of the EDP steps. ?Students will be
able to explain the science behind an electric
generator, specifically covering the concept
of electromagnetic induction. ?Students
will recognize that the input source to an
electric generator can vary significantly
giving rise to many green/renewable
source options. Beyond ?Students will continue
using the EDP for all future projects,
documenting their process in an engineering
notebook. ?Certain steps in the EDP process will
be emphasized/stressed in future projects
in order to continue with the above
Overarching Objectives.
