9Today's Demos
- Physical changes vs. Chemical changes
- The three little pigs (papers)
- The Whoosh bottle
10Physical VS Chemical Changes
- Changes in matter are constantly occurring around
us. - These changes are either physical or chemical
- Eating is a great example of both. It involves
both physical (chewing) and chemical (digestion)
changes
11Physical VS Chemical Changes
- Physical changes- form or appearance changes but
composition stays the same - evaporation, condensation, freezing
- Changes are to size, shape, state but the
chemical composition of the substance remains the
same
12Physical VS Chemical Changes
- Chemical changes- change the chemical composition
of the substance - burning changes wood to ash, smoke, gases
- Chemical change involves chemical reactions-
molecular bonds are broken and reformed to create
new substances reactants ? products - The new substances have different chemical
properties than the original - Chemical changes are not easily reversed
13Evidence of Chemical Change
14Physical Chemical Changes Lab
- Work with lab partner (groups of 2)
- Listen to and read all directions before
beginning the lab WEAR SAFETY GLASSES - Qualitative data is descriptive, written
information - Be sure and use a clean stir stick for each
sample - Turn in lab report to class bin when complete
15Poster Activity- Physical Chemical
- Work with lab partner (groups of 2)
- Create 1 poster showing physical changes
- Create 1 poster showing chemical changes
- See rubric and self-grade beforeturning in to bin
16The Rock Cycle- natural changes
- The rock cycle is an excellent naturally
occurring example of both physical and chemical
changes. - BrainPop!
