Welcome 8/20/09 back to Physiology!
Pick up the handout. What is Histology? Do you
have a 3 ring binder?
Simple Squamous Epithelial tissue

Agenda Learning Goals
  • Agenda/Homework
  • Physiology Notebook print guidelines from
    website
  • Begin Histology look at websites to review
    epithelial tissue
  • Goals
  • Recognize Epithelial tissue under the microscope

3
Microscopic Study
  • Cytology study of the cell
  • Histology study of tissues

4
Animal Cells Do you remember?
  • Membrane
  • ER
  • Ribosomes
  • Mitochondria
  • Lysosomes
  • Golgi apparatus
  • Nucleus
  • Nucleoli

5
Human Cells
  • Microscopic
  • Diverse in size, shape and function
  • What type of human cells can you name?

Red Blood Cell
Nerve Cell

7
Histology study of tissues
  • Groups of cells similar in structure and function
  • The four types of tissues
  • Epithelial
  • Connective
  • Muscle
  • Nerve

What is the function of each tissue type?
8
Epithelial Tissue cells packed close together
cells form continuous sheets
  • Covers the body
  • Lines parts of the body
  • Ex lining of blood vessels, surface of lining
of mouth and esophagus, skin (epidermis), lining
    of stomach, intestines, bladder trachea

9
Epithelial Tissue
  • Supported by connective tissue
  • Avascular but innervated contains no blood
vessels but supplied by nerve fibers
  • Regenerative rapidly replaces lost cells by
    cell division

10
Classification of Epithelia by shape
  • Squamous, cuboidal, or columnar

Figure 4.1b
11
Classification of Epithelia by layers
  • Simple or stratified
