  • After continuous efforts, there was a significant
shift in Chinas energy supply and demand at the
end of the 1990s, as we said goodbye to the
overall energy shortages. In 2000, the national
energy out put reached 1.09 billion tons of

Top-notch Interpretation
  • The idea that greenhouse gas emissions are
causing global warming began to be studied in the
late 1950s, but was not accepted until the early
1980s. Impact studies showed that failure to
control emission would be disastrous. The
scientific evidence raised public concerns and
resulted in calls for a global treaty, In 1988,
UNEP and WMO establish the IPCC to assess the
potential extent and impact of climate change and
to identify mitigating measures, in preparation
    for convention negotiations.

Top-notch Interpretation
  • As a result of the IPCCs scientific assessment,
it was recognized that climate change is damaging
the environment and threatening human survival.
In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly
    adopted a resolution launching convention
negotiations, and in 1992 the Framework
    ConventionUNFCCC was signed at Rio.

Interpret the following topic consecutively?
  • Poverty is deprivation of common necessities that
determine the quality of life, including food,
clothing, shelter and safe drinking water, and
may also include the deprivation of opportunities
to learn, to obtain better employment to escape
poverty, and/or to enjoy the respect of fellow
    citizens.

44
Some background information
  • Those living in poverty and lacking access to
essential health services, suffering hunger or
even starvation, experience mental and physical
health problems which make it harder for them to
    improve their situation.

45
  • Diseases of poverty reflect the dynamic
relationship between poverty and poor health
while such infectious diseases result directly
from poverty, they also perpetuate and deepen
impoverishment by sapping personal and national
    health and financial resources.

46
  • One third of deaths are due to poverty-related
causes. Those living in poverty suffer lower life
expectancy . Every year nearly 11 million
children living in poverty die before their fifth
    birthday.
  • Those living in poverty often suffer from hunger.
800 million people go to bed hungry every night.
  • Poverty increases the risk of homelessness. There
are over 100 million street children worldwide.
  • Increased risk of drug abuse may also be
    associated with poverty.
